Richard R:
When I was driving the nearest I got to hand balling was pressing a button on the Skate trailer 26 pallets off with a press of a button, happy days. Until they moved us onto Hydraroll trailers and I had to pull two levers and plug in a cable slave labour!!
two levers AND a cable, bxxxxxxs,as you say slave labour,
I wont do handball , mostly because I have asthma ( before anyone says anything this has been checked out under medical hgv entitlement to drive etc. ) I am not some need gas and air at every delivery point etc.!!! lol , but I would struggle with a trailer full of say cement bags , so I point blank refuse to handball anything as sometimes who knows what the hell is inside packaged goods , I went to a Yorkshire firm a few weeks ago and the fork lift driver said " oh you WILL have to handball it we have an agreement with your firm when they deliver these the driver HAS to handball em off " , when I told him " Look you either get somebody to do it or its bye bye with the full load back still on, I don’t work for them I am an agency driver so make ya mind up now " , 2 minutes later the factory manager was on the back throwing the said stuff on empty pallets for him .

I expect the manager was more than willing to do the handball, especially as you explained your situation to him in such a polite and friendly manner. A lesson for us all I think.
Regards. John.
My worst memory of handball[of which I did plenty] was l/pool docks.A full load of fishmeal on ships pallets in hessian bags. After doing that you were deff billy no mates. Everyone could smell you coming a mile away.
regards dave.

Well John maybe but in all fairness to the Factory Manager he didn’t seem to mind too much he seemed a hands on bloke ( excuse the pun ) he was dressed in work gear not a suit tie etc. as for the fork lift driver I think he was just being a smart a rse , once he realised I wasn’t gonna unload it his cockiness seemed to melt like an ice cube in a frying pan , had to laugh though when he said at the end of it " good job there was someone too help otherwise we would have not accepted it " , would love to have seen his face as I drove off because that’s what would have happened.
Can’t remember exactly where, but I went to s.e. london with a 35 foot trailer to pick up gawd knows how many little net bags of nuts for up norf. No pallets, just stack 'em all on the floor. Seemed like millions of the buggers, but at least they were light.
Just remembered. Cocoa beans in hessian sacks. Looked like a bloody immigrant from the west indies after that lot.

Had to handball 20 sheets of celotex today. Even had to climb on the back of the wagon to get it off. Didn’t wear my hi viz either.
Does this make me a real truck driver now or do I need to add tramping to my list? [emoji38][emoji41]
Obviously wasn’t in a TP depot. I jumped up on the bed to sort something out and two shirts came over and one asked “Forgotten something?” He was referring to my lack of hard-hat. When I went to jump down to get it, he told me to stay there and jumped in the cab for me. So at least someone looks after us…
PS forget tramping, you’re a real trucker. Unless you’re a zombie, then you’d be an unreal trucker.

Nope was in some country lane
TP its full hse kit. Even re-tie my boots to make sure they are tight [WINKING FACE]
Going to be delivering kitchens & furniture for next 3 days , going to be a killer all I’ve had to do for last 4 months is open the curtains for forkies ! , I need to lose this belly anyway lol.
Done plenty of it over the years - the worst was those clay drainage pipes - bloody thousands of them into a field with just a couple of farmhands to catch em and stack em.
More recently, on pallet system deliveries, handball was not uncommon. Bags of rubber chips for playgrounds; bags of compost to shops or dozens of boxes of handbags and shoes to Ebay sellers houses. All in a day’s work.

try laying the things then you will know you have done a days work,my back hurts at the memory’s
Every load I pull is handballed off,
window frames/doors and glass panes don’t really work on a pallet to be delivered to a wee double glazing showroom!!!
What ■■■■■■ me off more than carrying stuff were customers who’d stand and watch; Asian and Turkish customers were the worst. If people are busy fair enough but standing there smoking, talking gibberish, and watching you like a hawk (as if you want to nick some of the counterfeit Coca Cola?) juat made me want to throw theor delivery off the side of the wagon.
