a friend of mine has got a 1998 DAF XF Superspace 430 that has gone round the clock twice, and it was only last year that the head gaskets needed replacing
apart from that, it still pulls well
the FH i had when i worked for a company from Sweden had over 1.5million km on it and it still went like it had done just 500,000. It was also one of the test trucks for the original FH when it was launched, and it also pulled really well.
I also drove a 144 530 that had clocked up 960,00km when i left the job, it drove like a new motor, it was the best motor ive driven, and i have had around 8 brand new motors. (ex Charles Russell)
If you look at contract hire trucks they are usually changed around about 500,000 to 600,000 mile before they start costing too much to repair, :ie new engines or gearboxes etc.
Not as many as a good driver!
OVLOV JAY:
My 02 reg on coltons had 1.2million kms on it, but was starting to tire. They were spending the equivalent of finance for a new motor at one point on it. For about 3 months they were spending 2-300 on it every weekend. Imho of working with Volvos of various ages, they tend to be trouble free between 1-400 thousand, then you get wave 1 of troubles. Then they’re good between 5-800 thousand but after that they become a money pit.
This is exactly the same experience i had with Volvo. The version 1’s where/are a very good truck and take some beating. I know of a '95 FH 380 converted to a timber rigid and drag that has 1.9 million click’s and still give’s mostly troublefree 12 hour day’s on difficult heavy work. the owner is thinking of changing to a '02 ex Eddie Stobart…big spender eh
Km’s?, don’t we do miles anymore…

It’s an EU thing probably.
How many on here could divide km’s x 1.6 to get miles ?

Trigger once stated on Only fools and horses that he had the same broom for 20 years as he “Maintained it for 20 years. This old brooms had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time.”
We have a saying at out spot “Look after your brush”
dave replied- and your brush will look after you
No its just look after your brush
question is
how many miles do you think you could get out of a truck engine before big problems happen
which engines are the best which engine are the worst

As far as engine longevity goes the oil change intervals and quality of the lubricants used mostly determine engine wear, sympathetic drivers with a mechanical understanding who avoid thrashing the ■■■■■■■■ off a cold motor also play a big part.
So the version 1volvo 1995 has done the most why do you think this was exactly ?
Build quality ,materials used in parts etc ,again just curious .also a friend with 2006 164 420s doing Italy week in week out 1.1million on them and he still has faith in them although he is gonna wind them done soon.
I used to see a yellow MAN with French plates pulling an ND trailer on the A34 reguarly, in the windscreen was a sign saying 2,000,000 km’s. After a while i didn’t see it but then again began to see a newer TGX the same colour so i guess it died eventually
out of all the volvos in my company, one FH12 460 has done 1.4million and another 420 a bit less. haven’t heard about them being replaced yet
once helped a russian by interpreting him to the staff at a finnish papermill. his 143 450 had by that point done 2.5 million, and he claimed he’d get another 2.5 out of it
We have a few old Scania’s still going strong with about 1.5m 2m miles on clock. If you stay in or around liverpool you may have seen them. Good old yellow Scania’s haha
we have got some 03 reg daf cf 380s that have got over 2million kms on them still going well,on the original engines and gearboxes.they have outlived the 55 reg mercs that had been bought to replace them.the only reason we are getting rid of them now is because they carnt go into london any more.
I do a bit for a local firm. Motor I normally have is a 2003 470 Topline. Went over 1.3million km’s on Friday. Usually fully freighted aswell. They’ve got a 580 V8 with 1.1m kms on aswell. Both still very reliable.
The mighty 143!
my 56 plate MAN has just been taken off me at 900,000. still running well but defo starting to tire ;

Just wondering how many miles or km someone has got out of a truck ,scania ,Volvo ,merc, daf etc.i know a guy that had a 380volvo with 2 million done it was 1994 and looked like a ball of scrap but was still going and pulling well on tipper work ,thanks
You could drive them forever.
Cost of Maintenance not talking, but Fuel consumption.
But that Problem could you solve with a new Engine of new Technology. You just need to make sure you not going over the Torque as it would destroy Gearbox and Dif
