how many days round trip would it take to run from wellingborough to larissa greece? the truck would be double manned,is it poss in a week?
About 4 days one way, I’d plan. Overland, via RO-BG or Serbia.
Might be 1/2d - day faster by IT-GR ferry.
i used to average 2 trips a month to Greece:
Day 1, Bury St Edmunds to Hemel Hemstead Dover Calais to Lux Border
Day 2 thru Swiss to Como,
Day 3 to Ancona and on boat
Day 4 into Patras, drive to Elefsina nr Athens, tip on
Day 5, straight back to boat to sail mid afternoon
Day 6 into Ancona to Prato,
Day 7 load and up to Como,
Day 8 to Lux
Day 9 back to G.B.
legal as well!!
Obviously quicker than a truck but in 1999 I delivered a new Land Rover to Thessalonica for Save the Children Charity. They were involved with the Kosovo relief & were based in Skopje, Macedonia. As Macedonia was also classed as war zone i was told to go via Italy. I was met in Thessalonica.
I sailed Dover - Calais about 4pm on a Tuesday (day after a Bank Holiday, May i think). Down to Laon, France 1st night. Thru’ Swiss & into Chiasso for the 2nd night. 3rd night on the boat Bari - Igoumenitsa. Into Thessa for mid afternoon Friday.
So, 3 days exactly from Dover. Drove about 10 - 11 hrs a day.
So that kind of ties with Kindle’s Athens in 4 days alone in the truck. (though i think you must have been going some)
Double manned, if you make use of the hours available to you, (22 spread over?), i’d say 3, maybe just into the 4th day.
Looking where Larissa is, Igoumenitsa would be a good port.
If you aren’t used to driving in Greece, you will find the road from there East up through the mountains “interesting” to say the least. Thick cloud, washed out sections of tarmac, etc.
I stopped for diesel somewhere after i’ve dropped down out the mountains.
The garage owner was very chatty (in the pouring rain) & wanted to know where in England i came from. His son was at Leeds University!
every day on at 90kmh mate, 480 motor with 6 ton in the back on way down, 3 ton max on way back!!

This has changed a bit, Greece now has good network of motorways / dual carriageways. Igoumenits - Kozani - Thessalonik is also motorway, A2 “Egnatia motorway” and it’s impressive - LOTS of bridges and tunnels, winding around hills, up and down… Going to Larissa you’ll probably going it as far as Panagia and taking the exit just before tunnel for Meteora and Trikala.
This will also be a motorway at some point, but it’s still in planning / under construction.
Well it was almost 10 years ago HF. Glad to hear there’s been improvements.

It’s an “Interesting” drive when the weather is good but the Bulgarians do tend to push there luck.
Good luck.
