It all began nearly 10 years ago when I was free and single, after a days work there came the opportunity for a night on the razz. And the end of the night came and I decided I would become a right arse hole and try and drive home, believing I was sober I proceeded on my way. After a few miles I was thankfully stopped by a local cop car for having a light out. This was when it hit home, what have I done? Why would I be stupid enough to do this? This was the first and last time I ever had a drink and then drove a vehicle. I was shamefully arrested and locked in a cell over night. I was asked to attend court at a later date and this is when I got my driving ban, 30 months and £500 fine. At first I thought I was hard done to and the punishment was a bit excessive, but it was better than it being for murder after wiping out a family while drunk driving. So after my ban I received my licence back got a new car and had a family with the girl who I would eventually marry. High insurance premiums followed for the next 5 years with insurance per month costing more than my monthly bill for my car. So now after an 11 year career withing the nhs as a carer I want to make a career change to something that I enjoy doing, driving. So I have got my provisional entitlement and done theory and hazard perception and completed my initial driver cpc. Looking to start training just after Xmas, so was thinking as I don’t have experience with delivery driving I thought I could get onto a local agency and do some driving but oh no, can’t do without experience. So what should my plan be, leave the driver training until my endorsement is removed on Jan 2016 or go and do it and hope that there is someone looking for a newly qualified class c driver with an endorsement on my licence for a further year? I know I have done wrong and feel I have been punished for long enough but just wanting other people’s thoughts on this cheers in advance Paul
unfortunately you did the crime and are paying for it still That’s the whole point … no good putting someone away for what ever and letting them out on a clean slate in practice your allowed to drive after your ban, on Licence .
I would wait till the ban is totally removed.
I’m not sure if its still a question you would have to disclose if asked .
I’m looking at doing my C Class shortly so have been looking around at employers to gauge what the job situ is like. It does seem to stipulate by a lot of employers that no DD’s or IN10 etc are allowed (only minor convictions and generally less than 6 points) so may be better off to wait it out
Dave
Get your class C and look at doing agency work, they may take on drivers with DD or wait till 2016. But might aswell give it a try and see if anyone is willing to take you on instead of just waiting
Call agencies first. No point putting down £££ on doing your C if you’re only going to get stonewalled by employers and agencies alike.
get an address in Ireland,a quick medical, and change your licence to a paddy one, theres a good chance the stamp wont follow you…use that licence for the uk,when your going for a job, just say you lived there and are now relocated back to England, itl do you for ages with an agency etc as its an e.u licence. pm me if you want a different way of doing it that might be more bulletproof.
To be honest I would have thought a sympathetic small haulier is probably your best bet of finding HGV work, I can’t see an agency giving you work with a DR10 on your licence, the problem with going to agencies is that first you’ve got to get the agency bod to give you work and they can only do that with the agreement of their clients, so you’ve got two bridges to cross rather than one.
I wish you luck whatever you decide to do
As well as DD & INs , or 6 points etc reasons the don’t or cant employ you ,there are a lot who command you have held licence for 1 or 2 years for insurance reasons, at least you would have bought some time by the time its spent , also you may as some say be lucky enough to find some work , also if you see a solicitor or citizens advice, im sure there are circumstances where you can get this removed earlier by the courts or even a good internet search may give you that info, but advice is better they tell you anything on the internet, good luck .
Thanks for taking the time to reply folks, after reading lots of job vacancies on the Internet I have been noticing a lot that say no DR/DD within 10 years. So if I wait until after Christmas yes I will miss the possibility of the Christmas rush, but I will be 10 years into an 11 year endorsement and it won’t be so stressful on the family money as I am the sole earner as the wife has went back to college

You could try van work. Sometimes its better money than lorry driving.
To be honest I would avoid agencys till you have more experience. When I first passed my test all agencies looked for a minimum 2 years driving experience. Its slackened off a bit now but agencies still need experienced drivers due to their insurance set up. And this unfortunately for you means that with a drunk driving conviction they will not take you on. Just send your cv and make phone calls to companies till someone offers you a chance. And someone will. Agencies at the moment have better hourly rates (Where I am in Scotland the agency I work for pays £4 per hour more than the company full timers) but unfortunately you will probably be wasting your time
PM sent
My advice would be to get your test done and try to find work if you cant find work now due to the dd on license at least when they come off you will of had license for nearly 2yrs most applications ask how long have you held the licence for not how long have you been driving so it could help you out later
^^^ and some companies insist on x number of days driving in the last 6 months

You ain’t wrong there Radar… Around Bristol you can pick up 9 or 10 quid an hour easily…
My insurance policy won’t cover anyone who has more than 6 points, or any convictions for DD, DR or IN. It also requires drivers to have held their LGV licence for a minimum of 12 months, so it may be worth you taking your test now even if you don’t actually use it until your conviction is removed from your licence.
