I have thought about that Seth but to be quite honest I couldn’t care less if I never saw a lorry again.
Yea my dads been a driver all his life and got chance of retiring 2 yrs early so he did,the gaffer at work whos a mate of mine out of work said he could come and do the odd day,he said he never wants to see another lorry again and just slags the way transport has become,he sees sees owt about the dcpc he goes into a full blown rant sad that a bloke has done it all his life and now hates it with a passion
Coming up to 14 years for me at my current firm, no plans to go anywhere anytime soon! Been there since I was 17 and they paid for my HGV licence, ADR, CPC and more.
7 1/2 years at current job, they put me through class 1 earlier this year, so tied to them for 2 years. Easy enough work, money not great but it pays the bills
I started a thread the other week about my mate who hated his job and was on tablets for stress etc but wouldn’t leave, well last week a miracle happened and he put his notice in,the relief in his voice was unbelievable and he seems loads happier…
I’m not one to move on easy but my advice is if it gets you down move elsewhere.

You tend to settle down in your late 40`s I was with my final job 17 years when I retired, but before that it was chase the money.
Much like you worked full time until I was 67 , giving me a total of 17 years , now return to work at the same place occasionally on a part time basis .
When I retired I said then if I dont use my licence in the 1st year I wont renew and I didn`t
Longest 10 yrs, prior to that, and after that I seem to move every 3-4 yrs. its nearly 11yrs since I left that 10yr job, and I’m on my 5th employer since then suppose I will be due a change soon

I’ve worked for the same company for 37 yrs and I’m getting made redundant this week , think I’ll have a short break before I look for something else.
Like you Trev I was with a firm for 37 years and got made redundant back in 2006. Finished on the Friday started a new job on the Monday, brand new units, brand new trailers and equipment and doing the same type of work as before, hauling offshore drilling equipment and still based in Gt. Yarmouth. At the time it was the best in town in my opinion.
I’m enjoying retirement now but miss the laughs. Now and again I venture down the quay for a natter and a brew with the boys. Glad I didn’t renew my licence though.
If your happy and you know it clap your hands…it depends on what your looking for in a job, if the tackle is good, the money is good, the work is good along with the staff you work with, then why change, you know the saying : The grass always looks greener on the other side. I have often changed jobs and cut off my nose to spite my face so to speak, but thats me, quick tempered, and act instinctively…ask questions afterwards with regret.

Think I must be the odd one then, after leaving school spent 24 years working at first job then left to go driving spent 7 years at second then went agency but only for three firms three years at one four at another with 6 month gap. Now in my 50s left driving for a 9 month contract working on the railway.

The enjoyment of moving around is meeting new people. New conversations. New routines and challenges.
Consensus where I am is that drivers ate more than often want to follow the money.
No such thing as loyalty .
Well, you’re either an “extrovert” or an “introvert” I’m happy not to speak to anyone all week, not especially cuz I’m miserable although I have my moments, it’s just I’m happy enough on my own all the time & don’t NEED company. Some people thirst for personal contact though which is fair enough if that your thing. I do think it isn’t good for some folk to have to have a partner as well, some women get themselves in to shocking situations with scum bags just because they must be with someone all the time.

Ive done 13yrs with a break in the middle thinking the grass was greener, went back with my tail between my legs ,lost my unit and started back like the new lad with a old unit a the crap work for a while, fair play to them it serves me right i was a propper bum lick when i went back and ooooohhhh boy did they give it me big time
My longest (and ironically worst) job lasted only 2 years. I get bored very easily and enjoy new challenges. I’ve also failed to work anywhere that has warranted my loyalty. If, one day, the money and conditions meet what I think is an acceptable standard I’ll stick with it.
No luck so far though, on my way out of my current place, just not sure where yet.
