So all these Tesco motors and whatever else which are running at 50/52mph all day end up ‘killing their running gear’?

Mine goes off the clock which I’d estimate at about 80mph. (Normally limited to 56mph). If we select unrestricted it goes off the clock.

I know of two companies who have all had persistent gearbox problems running at 52, one of which was told directly by the manufacturer that limiting them was the cause and we have too
would doubt Tesco give a toss as they will all be on a 3 year hand them back deal.

It must depend on the manufacturer, a place I used to work got brand new merc actros, 63 plate at the time & 2545s, we had to go out with a merc driving instructor to be shown how to drive them correctly! They were set to 52.8mph as, with the usual ruthless German efficiency, this was the optimum speed for the vehicle, fully laden or empty.
Ours were set at 52.8mph, now each one coming back from service is set at 50mph.
I just sit there hour after hour not overtaking anything, it’s becoming rather monotonous especially M11 at night, really struggle going up there
Goes a LOT faster downhill though, seem to be getting more bollockings for speed warnings

Sounds like a different lost world of the last days here of night trunking with proper trucks at proper speeds.
This thread is FAF, boasting about doing 57mph!
It used to be that you never had a fast lorry unless it would go off the clock, I had a 1735 Merc that went so fast the mirrors would slam in against the side of the cab about 200rpm after the needle dropped off the end of the taco and it still had more to go lol
The speedo in my Peterbilt went to 100mph and I had that off the clock a few times too [emoji41]
It was always in a different league over there.
But the night time motorways of the 1980’s here were about as close as it ever got.You did a previous post about doing some runs for Independent Express. As one of the ‘slow’ running 65 mph lot in the day they must have usually been off the end of their tachos most of the time. But the important bit was that we all usually realised that safety was/is all about the amount of room ahead not how fast we were running.
Let’s be honest here. No truck is what you could call fast. Anything under 60 mph is not considered to be fast.
Going back to the eighties the company I worked for bought a new fleet of Leylands from Freighters to Roadtrains.
Now they were fast as far as trucks go. You could easily do 75- 80 mph and the Roadtrains were capapble of going off the clock and as far as I remember the clock showed at least 100mph.
We also had two D series Fords (rigids) with ■■■■■■■■ V8’s in them. Quick off the mark and got faster and faster on a motorway. Good old days.
50mph. I don’t have to overtake anything then. I can sit in lane one all day.
Mine says 56 on the speedo, 90k on cruise and tachograph, but I’ve tried 2 sat navs, and different gps speedos on my phone, tablet and cab phone. They all say 53/54. It’s caused multiple arguments at volvo. As earlier stated, it would fail the tacho check. It’s illegal due to the percentage it’s out by. They won’t recalibrate it though, saying it won’t be done until it’s due. I pointed out that if it was doing 59 and they knew, it would be straight on the rollers. But 3mph under rather than over, and they don’t care. The prick just shrugged his shoulders
65mph. Every truck I’ve driven here has been limited to the same, some did 66mph but thats it.

Belvedere to Heydock in 3hrs 45mins most nights and that was only going over the speed limit twice…
All the way there and all the way back [emoji3] [emoji3]

If it is then it can’t be won by anything here or in Europe since the early 1990’s.

It is and it can only be won by someone who had an MAN, a Merc or a TurboStar as they had the highest top speeds.
Drivers of Scania and Volvo have no chance as they would only just go off the clock.
