http://www.speedtest.net use the Maidenhead server
That is poor, my mobile downloads faster than that!
Ant the telephone exchange is less than two miles away
Hahaha - how do you all cope with such shocking Internet speeds!!!
The Maidenhead server seems to top out at around the 20 Mb/s mark - so I chose Amsterdam instead - as it had the capacity to cope, even though it’s around 400-miles away from me!
I was on BT for a long time, but they were only giving me about 5Mbit download. When I asked for the MAC number to transfer away, they told me it was not possible to get faster than that on my line.
Ha Ha.
It’s £7.50 a month cheaper too.
And the upload is more than double what BT gave me, so I can run my server at home too.
I thought the limiting factor was the phone line, how are some of you getting up in the 50’s for download speeds■■?

Distance from the exchange can limit speed if you’re ADSL (via 'phone line) - I’m on cable, which is HFC (Hybrid Fiber Copper), and not really limited by distance… Although cable can suffer from its own set of limiting factors.
not sure if its good or bad but it works for me. its a wireless laptop so dont know if that makes any difference
How come the Maidenhead server is better than Manchester. I thought it was to do with Distance
Internet speed tests, also depend on what’s happening between you and the test server, if one of the routers in the middle happens to be in heavy use, you’ll never get a decent result, if you check at quiet time, you’ll get a more accurate result.
Look at the internet like the road network, with the ISP grade connections being motorways, and dialup being a country lane. If your ISP’s connection to you sends your stuff down decent A roads to the motorway, then you’ll get low ping times (the latency score - or how long the journey took), and faster downloads. However, if your route to the test server involves the internet equivalent to a trip round the M25 or via Brum on the M6, then you’re never gonna get a decent result unless you try it at 3am.
I’m glad that I don’t have to download from the same Maidenhead server the speed test is on
according to this the UK is rated at a poor 40th for download speeds and even worse 54th for upload speeds
