How fast can your PC calculate Pi

Just posting for a bit of light fun

Download SuperPi from here brothersoft.com/superpi-download-66585.html (it’s only small)
Unzip it and run it. Select calculate (top left) & set to ‘1 million’ and post your speed and computer processor/ram.

Mine,

1st run 11.346 secs
2nd run 12.226 secs

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz Overclocked to 3.40GHz
OCZ 6GB DDR3

Athlon **** CPU (Cant remember)
2gb DDR
32.529

Im at loophole 7 when your finished

Really must save up for new PC…
42.766s

52seconds for my laptop (hpdv9646 em, amd turon 64 x2 1.9ghz, 2gb ram) but hey it plays games fine so is fast enough for me. If the met-office computer goes down and I need to calculate the weather myself I then might upgrade.

23.049 seconds

intel(r) core™ 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.4GHZ(4 CPU’s), ~2.4GHz

3GB Ram

whatever that all means (just copied it from dxdiag)

is that good or crap? i presume its crap!!!

32.66 seconds

CPU: 2.10 gigahertz Intel Pentium Dual Core
2GB DDR RAM

It’s fast enough for me

First run: 16.860
Second run: 16.891

PC = Homebrew job, ASUS Maximus Formula mobo (1st generation) running:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 2 x 3.00Ghz. - Running at stock speed, no overclock.
RAM - 4Gb of Crucial Ballistix (Micron D9 chips) DDR2 @ 1066. - Again, stock speeds.
OS - Windows XP x64 edition.

Runs Quake Live and Quake 3 Arena (at over 650fps!) - and that’s all that matters!!

Nope it’s a good PC… ripe for a bit of overclocking  Trouble with SuperPi is it doesn’t use all 4 cores but then it’s only a bit of fun.

Nice  What graphics card?

how the hell do you do that then? what does it do?

47 seconds FFS  , My pc has really been neglected lately, might have summat to do with my shiny new PS3

Overclocking is running the CPU/system at a higher speed than stock (memory can sometimes be overclocked too)

As an example, running your 2.4ghz cpu @ 3.0ghz.

Some motherboards are easier to o/clock than others but most can be done. The most important consideration is cooling, a standard CPU cooler will limit the ability to push the o/clock. Push too far & the system will become unstable due to heat build up & there’s also the possibility of frying the CPU

It’s not an exact “science”, more a ■■■■ it & see type of thing.

I built mine with overclocking in mind.

It’s an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512 - which is a bit long-in-the-tooth now, compared to today’s cards… The whole system was quite a monster when I built it - but it’s around 15 months old, so not exactly state of the art these days and it lags behind the latest hardware somewhat!

I was tempted to overclock, but I’d need to improve the cooling before I started playing and I’m not sure the mobo would get it to go very far. The mobo seemed a good choice at the time, but I’ve since read mixed views about it… After I’d bought it - typical! :unamused:

Still, I’ll probably keep it as it is for another 12 months or so, then build another monster!! :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

The E6850 CPU is a beauty for o/clocking  I’d be tempted to give it a go!

Theres plenty of good coolers available at good prices.

My PCs current idle temperatures are around 35°C - with both cores showing the same temperature. That’s in a room with an ambient temperature of around 23°C. So there’s probably room to play - even using my current cooler. It’s the mobo that might be the problem, as at the moment it’s rock-solid stable - but that might change if I push it too far!! :frowning:

Might have a little play this weekend!! :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Get youself a can of compressed air & give all the fans/graphics/cpu a good squirt then a good hoover, you’ll be surprised how much dust they gather… all hinders cooling. Check google for o/clocking guides & find a good temp moniter… above all be gentle  if this is your main PC you don’t want to be cooking anything

You might want to have a look at water cooling. Never needed it myself, but I know a few folks who’ve done it very sucessfully. Thier mainly gamers.

processor 1.6Ghz
ram 504MB

it only took 50.443 seconds!! but i only use the computer for web surfing so it does everything i need (slowly)

Just under 9 seconds

NASA just called… can they borrow your PC
