How far in advance HGV renewal

Evening Guy
Your thoughts please

I am 55 in June and my licence (HGV/C+E) runs out end of May 2022.

I know I need a medical and have to send it all off to DVLA.
Normally, the DVLA send out forms 56 days in advance.

Slight issue, I need to have my licence with me when I go to the USA to hire a car at the end of April/Start of May
I dont really want it sitting with the DVLA and not back in time for my trip.

Does anyone know how far in advance you can apply for a renewal?
And is there any way to tell if I need a my picture on my licence?
I really dont want to send it all off, only for it to go south because a new picture is needed.

I will of course be calling the DVLA but I do invisage a loooooooooooooooong wait to speak to a person.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Stay safe!!

My licence runs out on the 22nd March, and I received my renewal form 2 weeks ago.
It clearly states that a new photo will be required

Do not send old licence. Say you need it for training. It will be fine

I would be inclined to start HGV renewal including medical now. But as mentioned hang on to your licence. DVLA is no longer fit for purpose and a whole bunch of so called management need kicking down the road.

it’s definitely what I would do, however, Might not be any use in the USA if it’s past the expiry date

Only HGV would be past sell by date

… this is correct
