I took me from December when I passed my Class 2 test until March before I got a start and it was a bit of luck that helped with it, through an agency with the local council driving bin lorries.

Knocked on doors and asked if “they were taking drivers on”?
Mind you, i spoke in my mother tongue . . no offence.
Biggest cowboy in the area but I got some practice in before moving to better things.
Scabbiest oldest fleet in the county happened to be in my town, asked 'em for a job and they gave me a start about 3 days after i passed me class 1, this was 1976 though.
general haulage, bloody hard work, rough old tackle, but the pay was one of the best in the county for general…surprising how many can’t see past the shiny fancy truck and thats always been the case, flash doesn’t always pay the cash.
Couldn’t get a job in Glasgow when I passed my Class 2. Got a job with a company called MKG Distribution that was willing to take on young and inexperienced drivers based in Wolverhampton though. 3 weeks away and 1 week at home. Not ideal but gave me some experience. Done it for 8 months and eventually got a job back home with Lynx Parcels. Passed my Class 1 while working with them. Passed my test on the Friday and was let loose on my own on the Monday in an artic. So fortunately the lack of experience thing wasn’t a problem for me with Class 1. Haven’t looked back since.
My previous employer paid for my class 2 so I was out in an 18t motor the day after passing. I left when I moved miles away and then done my class 1 in November 2010, had no luck gettin a class 1 job, started doin class 2 agency in January 2011 for a big national company and pestered them to give me a chance in an artic, proved my self to them on class 2 and they gave me a class 1 assessment in late feb 2011 and I have been in an artic with the same company ever since
Persistence is the key in my opinion, don’t give up
I just went round the local agencies and signed on, got the usual stuff about not having experience so may be difficult getting work etc. One of them called me an hour after i signed up asking if i could go to UPS in Dartford and do a run as the guy booked to do it had dropped out. So off i went, did the job and had constant work from that agency for the next two/three years til i got me class one
Just goes to show how being in the right place at the right time aswell as being ready and willing can make the difference
I sent out two applications for job vacancies that were being advertised online and visited two companies in person that weren’t advertising vacancies. One of the companies I visited gave me a permanent full-time job. I strongly believe the best way for a newbie to get a job is to be a cheeky chappy and go knocking on doors.
I passed a car test in 1988, minibus 1989, 7.5t 1990, then C+E in 1991.
I wouldn’t have been able to get some experience in between without the job giving me some on a casual basis. Even after passing in 1991, I didn’t have a job driving LGV’s except as and when full timers took some leave, and their shifts required covering. At least that meant some variety across differing duties involving manuals, automatics, tail lifts, curtains, straps, and all the other jazz they don’t teach you at driving school.

I honestly cant remember how i went about getting work, think it just sorta happened
It was the agency route for me.Lots of guys on here bad mouth the agencies ,but who else will give a noob the chance.
I passed my test in the army in '93 and got out in '94 at 21…
Called in to a company called Gillmans in Ashford on the Friday the same week I got out …
The Sunday I was in a DAF 95 on my way to Milan for the most eventful trip of my driving career
One of our guys was a van driver, decided to take his Class 1 off his own bat, when a vacancy came up, we moved him from the vans to the trailer. I think it’s a route worth looking at even if van driving is not your burning ambition.
the two rule thing, is usually set by the insurance companies. The difference on our policy was an additional £500.00 excess - it might be worth saying that you are prepared to pay the extra in the event of an accident, it might swing things in your favour.
I used to help my farther in law do a bit of maintenance at the weekends, his boss said if I passed my class 1 he would start me on a local job out of Massey ferguson in Coventry to church lawford. True to his word that’s what happened, I was only driving a transit beforehand.
Count yourself lucky in the fact that jobs are there, just a bit tricky to find that’s all. In other trades companies are taking advantage by selling qualified individuals the opportunity to gain this much needed experience for a very high cash price with no guarantee of a job in the end…
Went down job ctr in 1989 after passing class1. The only job was driving a 7.5t Bedford for horticultual firm. They were not going to take me on until I spurted out madly “how can I get any experience if you don’t give me a chance” That was the MD. I got the job & stayed with them as they grew from Bedfords to ERF E10 units. Was there 16 yrs!
Even slept out in the Bedfords with no sleeper cab, just an old camping mattress across the seats!!! Like to see a newby do that now!
Was a night shunter, i was getting sick to death on nights with no jobs on days so i decided to do my class 2 and class 1 with a view to leaving the company. Whilst looking for a driving job i stayed on the shunting, one night they where short a driver and couldn’t get agency for love nor money i put my hand up saying i had a license. The manger slung me the keys and gave me a contract the next day Right place and the right time i guess.
