How do you find work?

Hi, I’m looking to start a haulage firm (please don’t tell me how i’m going to fail i’ve heard enough of it! ) But How does a Haulage firm find work? Also what is a Freight Forwarder?

Thanks guys!

I go straight over the roundabout by Sainsburys. I’ve never failed to find my way to work yet

Also what is a Freight Forwarder

someone that wants you to work for peanuts :unamused:

But How does a Haulage firm find work?

you go out and find it :unamused:

or you can buy mine thats already setup and runs well :grimacing:

New starts would knock on doors or subcontract. Existing firms would also do this as well as advertise, word of mouth etc.

A freight forwarder does exactly that.
They arrange the “forwarding” of freight.

A clearing house is a haulier with no lorries. They sub out work at the lowest possible price to desperate hauliers.

Good luck in your enterprise. Reading this forum from beginning to end is a must.

Hope this helps.

Well, if you want to find your own work, you make lots and lots of phone calls, go out and visit potential clients and talk to them about their requirements, and do everything possible to accommodate those requirements. You’ll probably find that “cheap” is the major requirement unless you can find a niche area where customers will pay a premium for some type of value added service.

Generally, unless you have such work from the get-go, you’d start a haulage firm by subcontracting for a large haulier who doesn’t mind you going off to do your own work as and when, and then try to build that up.

A freight forwarder is an agent who puts desperate consignors in contact with desperate hauliers, and skims off all of the money in between. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you Goaty that was very helpful, I am reading a lot of the Owner Driver section of the forum but I couldn’t find anything on this topic

So’s mine, but you’ll need a hell of a good sense of humour to see you through the times ahead if you actually do this.

No dafter than your original post tho?Finding work for haulage BUSINESS is mostly same as finding work for any business, the accent being on business,if you’ve no business or haulage experience the work most open to you will be the ‘scrag end’ or 'crumbs that drop off some one elses table’maybe you’d be better off looking at getting a ‘telehandler’ then a fleet of them■■? :grimacing:

Yet you have done…

If I was looking to set up a haulage firm (or more properly become an owner driver) I think of use Harry’s business model as a template for my own.

Obtain my Own lorry and get about working for a firm like Gregory’s and build my own work slowly from there.
