How do we stamp out back handers

Rob K:
You sit at home typing on internet forums moaning about stuff

Bit rich from somebody who has over 7000 post to his name.

Rikki-UK:
Little brown envolopes have been part of this game ever since I have been in it.

The tradition of dropping of “Xmas” cards and a bottle of something is done by every company I have worked for, and some of the Xmas cards seemed a little more bulky than the rest .

“Sweetners” are part of nearly every business, and always have been.

Aint that right,
I still have a share in the Private Hire firm I used to part own and xmas always costs of a grand in ‘cards’ to business’. Cant see haulage being any different.

He gets an extra £50-60 quid in his hand, I keep the roof over my head and the family’s bellies full - what’s the problem?

I suppose that the problem, from your point of view, is when the next driver pays ÂŁ15 a day for a days work.
Where does it end? ÂŁ15-ÂŁ20-ÂŁ25 a day ?
It may be the real world but it can’t be right.

In all honestly, it ends with me, because everyone else in this country is so wrapped up their do-gooder ways to even consider it as an option and that suits me just fine. You sit at home typing on internet forums moaning about stuff and telling everyone that’ll listen about your “rights” and how unfair everything is while I’m out there working and keeping the wolf from my door for a quid an hour less than I’d like, but at least I’ve actually got some work.

The choice is yours

Quid an hour less glory boy

That’ll be where I’m going wrong then. There I was thinking it was the economic melt down that’s unfolding by the minute. All I needed to do was bung all of my customers £15 a day (I think that’s where the bidding got upto) and suddenly they’ll have work coming out of every orifice. :bulb: Oh yeah and I must stop trying to be such a balanced individual. Maybe joining the BNP and reading Murdoch’s redtop flagship would do it ! :stuck_out_tongue:

No wonder we are in a mess some low life,s on here would shaft thier own mother

Isn’t that another Greek thing? :stuck_out_tongue:

I’VE ALLREADY SOLD HER

Now who,s being xenophobic wheelnut?

What a ■■■■■ you really are MR K! Whoever your working for must have seen you coming. Working for less than you want, ar’nt we all chap now get off your soap box and do some of that 'sitting on forums moaning about stuff '.■■

When I was a kid my old man was a TM for a smallish haulage firm of 15-20 trucks. I regularly went with him around his customers on a Saturday morning in the Cortina dropping off brown envelopes and bottles at works, yards and offices across Scotland. The quality of the bottle and weight of the envelope varied between customers and also the time of year.

That’s the way it was that I knew of 35+ years ago and it’s the same today, trust me. Bigger firms will still use the bottle & envelope sweetener but have added in the ‘all expenses paid golfing holiday’ or ‘international truck show visit’ and other such ‘rewards’ to maintain ‘relationships’.

A backhander or as I know it, a ‘bung’ to buy or keep work will never go away, cash in hand is very persuasive with most folks in most industries.

Exactly right, and in my local language it is still known as a drink :stuck_out_tongue:

My mate used to be treated at a Sauna if he could load a couple of trailers for export

I think we have a stinky can of worms here, while I see the mercenary attitude to any price will do as long as I am working, we will never improve our lot wether we are Ods or drivers. But can I remind everbody that Payola is an offence punishishable by lengthy prison terms. Trouble is proving it goes on, suspicion is not admisable evidence.

Bungs are part of the working world, always have been and probably always will be. Get used to them.

I don’t agree or disagree with them but the practice goeson everywhere, trust me.

You might need to get your hand in your pocket and treat someone this Christmas

 I knew there’d be one who’d start jumping up and down. My reply was entirely hypothetical as I don’t drive for a living anymore and am financially “comfortable” in my own line of work, but the point was that if I was struggling to provide for my hypothetical family then I wouldn’t think twice about bunging whoever was dishing out the work a few extra quids to ensure that I was kept working.

Now you can call me all the names under the sun, I really don’t give two hoots what you or your cronies think. When times are hard I look after number one. Selfish? Yes. Deal with it.

anybody whos on the agency or an owner driver or similar wants to think about a way they can be the first on the planner minds when a job comes in.

it is a dog eat dog world out there and ÂŁ100 in the right pocket could bring 2/3/4 grands worth of work for an owner driver and maybe a good drink for the agency employer could see maybe a few sundays in the new year at ÂŁ18.00 ph and a few full weeks.

whats that saying
speculate to acumulate now where did that saying come from. :smiling_imp:

why should it be fair cos backhanders are rife in any industry.

Gosh, one chap bribing another
would never have happened in my day :open_mouth: .

I am astonished that people find the practice of bunging, bribing or payola acceptable, what ever happened to honesty and decency, are you all telling me that you turn a blind eye to all crimes or just the ones that you decide are not crimes but just the way you interpret the law of the land. Some of you are prepared to bribe your way to the top of the employment tree regardless of cost. When you run out of money because everybody else has done the same, do you then offer up your wife or girl friend for the best deal or maybe your children could be part of the bargin, where will it end?? You think I am exagerating or talking hollier than thou, well think again. I have been subject to payola three times in my proffession as an OD, it is not funny and it is not nice.
The third time happend just recently, I am now with a different firm because of “extra payments” How many more times do I have to vote with my feet before everybody has the courage to say no no no.Just bare this senario in mind. 50 truck drivers are registered with Agency ABC, all 50 drivers are now bunging 50 quid to get first preference for a job, to get noticed you will have to pay 100 quid, see where I am going?? Come on guys show some spirit shop the shysters or at the very least dont pay. Merry Xmas

Recently there was a rather heated debate regarding " Grassing ", namely suspected drink driving, the response was mainly that if it didn’t affect you directly then you should keep your snib out. This seems to be the way of the world at the moment, I have posted my own feelings on this subject ( Greasing the wheels ), and I stand by it, the only people who can change this practice are the O/D’S, If you are prepared to hand over your hard earned dosh to these guys in order to get the work, just remember, some other ZB will no doubt be informed how much you are paying and up the ante. Be it on your own head, if you don’t like this practice don’t participate. As for grassing the shyster’s, grass to who?
