How do they do that in adverts?

How is it possible for tv companies to turn up the volume during tv adverts,it gets louder to get attention while you are in the kitchen making a cuppa.■■?The black and white spiralling thing in the top right of the screen,is that to count how many are watching,in order to sell tv time to advertisers at peak times■■?

The black and grey square you see is when the advert is due, ie:- when you see that you can bet your bottom dollar that the advert will come on within a matter of secs.

This question came up on a radio phone in. The expert said that programmes go out in sterio but ads go out in mono. this somehow makes the ads louder.

Nah, we’ve had the same over here, only difference being, the ignorant pigs here, give you no warning, just cut off halfway through a sentence, and have ad’s as close together as four minutes.
The reason they sound louder is they use sound compression, so that instead of the volume going up and down slightly as people speak, or music plays (modulation), it stays the same, so it seems louder. That’s the explanation we got anyway.
Whatever the reason, it’s still ■■■■■■

:grimacing:

Whilst on the subject of TV noise pitches - why do they use high pitch bleeping to block out swear words - why not just mute them out

Its so you know its a rude word. If it was just muted there would be a spate of broken tellys being taken to the tip after being abused while the owner watches gordon ramsay in one of his usual “ettiquette” programs.

Yep, just like wot I sed.

The RNID brought this to the attention of ITV boss Michael Grade, say Ms Harrison, and was told it was unintentional and due to the compressed audio files used in commercials, also known as pain in the arse.
