How do the traffic light cameras work?

The camera only should activate once lights turn to red or if you were speeding, yes little known fact traffic light cameras can do speeders as well as light jumpers.

Here in ,Canada they have a great system on a lot of major lights even in small towns and that is, about 100 yrds back from the set of lights there is an overhead gantry with 2 flashing ambers.
If you pass this sign and the ambers are flashing, you will not make the lights giving you plenty of time to slow down and stop, whereas if the ambers are not flashing, you know you’re good to go as long as you’re near the speed limit.

It’s best to remember your HC. Amber means STOP and if you cannot stop on approach you are going too fast.
Best policy is to ease off when approaching a green light. That way you never get a ticket or cause an accident. Simple really.

The fact is the ridiculous establishment idea of stop on amber effectively defeats the object of the amber light. In which case it might just as well go from green to red.Bearing in mind that just the reaction time to stop from 20 mph is 20 feet let alone the quite reasonable speed of 25 mph against an amber light which changes within 15 feet of the line.Realistically the stupid idea of stop on amber requires advance warning in the form of a flashing green as in the case of places like Austria.Which is actually what the amber light is ‘supposed’ to/‘should’ be there for. :unamused:

Funny you should say that. Back in about '68 I’d just left spitalfields after putting about half a load of fruit and veges on; can’t remember if I was then off to the garden to load more. Anyway, on the one way bit just down from the market the lights went amber and I kept going. I got a summons (no tickets then) and it said that this ■■■■■■■■ copper had done me for not stopping when the light went to amber when the front of my vehicle was 5 yards from the line at an estimated speed of 25mph !! Believe it or not I was done (like a kipper some might say) I can’t remember what the fine was but I got and endorsement on my licence.
Quick edit: didn’t even see the aforementioned ■■■■■■■■ your honour.

This may put your mind at rest, I know it may not be in Notts but they are much the same.

I don’t know how they work elsewhere but in NYC they are totally screwed up. I sometimes sit at a red light and suddenly one f them will flash for no reason

Truck is a lot longer then car. (one might say) It has 5-6 axles. It is possible to clear pressure sensors with unit on amber( legally) , but trailer axles can trigger camera on red. Depends on speed.

some j are so small that the unit passed the j while trailers axles are still at traffic light line, and if a guy in front turns with out indicators into a yard, u can end up on red light with trailer.

The chances are small, but it can happen.

I was stitched up similar to that at the lights in Hanworth on the A 312 soon after I’d started driving in the 1970’s.I pleaded not guilty and took it to court and the distance the copper gave was that type of example IE less than the reaction distance from 25 mph let alone stopping distance. The court still said guilty. So I’ve always treated amber as stop regardless of the circumstances unless it’s actually over the line when it changes.Including an example of having my first car hit twice at two different sets of lights in a week and the insurance companies of the two other drivers shared the write off cost between them. :unamused:

The people who make up the rules in that regard are just idiots.Being that as I said it defeats the object of the amber light which is ‘supposed’ to be there as a warning of the change to red.

Ironically the slower the approach speed the more chance there is of the front crossing on green and the back going through on red.More reason for either amber to mean what it says and be phased accordingly or a flashing green to do the same job as the Canadian example.

I’d love to know of anyone who’s successfully stopped a fully laden artic in the split second it takes to change to red without crossing the White line or wrecking the load.[emoji15]
I only Know of 1 person who’s got away with it & it was a bus driver. I think the union told him what to say[emoji6]

The amber light is on for nearly 3 seconds before changing to red.

Wow, plenty of time to react & comfortably come to a stop…[emoji15]

Assuming that amber is the same as red in meaning stop what is the relevance. :unamused:

It’s actually a case of ‘reacting’ to the change from green to amber and comfortably coming to a stop. The change from amber to red being a ‘red herring’ in that regard. :smiling_imp:

the traffic light cameras on the approach to poole along holes bay road at the adsa end are both speed and red jumpers, remember it is 30 mph.

Biggest earner in Dorset - it got me in April 2010 at 36mph - I’ve no excuse, I’m local. :open_mouth:
