How do auto wagons gearboxes select gears?

How do auto wagons select gears? Do they usually have a selector stick similar to lots of cars, or do the have switches / dials?

Mine is on the steering colum, its a Renault. Its got Drive and Netural then another switch that toggles reverse or crawler. Pull the stick towards you to switch between auto and manual, flick it up to change up, and down for down changes. Dafs have a selector on the dash with a stick on the steering colum for manual gear up’s or downs. Same with the MAN’s except the selector dial is down the side of you next to the park brake. Volvo’s and Mercs are also on the steering colum as do Scania’s. Ivecco’s have 3 buttons on the dash, press D once for drive, press and hold for crawler, works the same with the reverse as well.

A great question SiAmon, but I’ve split it into a separate topic with its own title because people with that kind of knowledge probably wouldn’t be reading the topic it was posted to.

Telling you this serves to give it a nice bump right to the top of the forum.

It’s all done by Magic, Witchcraft & Wizardry.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I’d just wondered if the manufacturers had come up with a a standard method of selecting gears, or was it an odd-ball set up.

I’m now going to try and get out more, and stop 'wondering ’ for a few days…
