In answer to the simple question, I did my training in a coach, then a lorry, then with a trailer…
Cheers

Trukkertone:
did class 3 and a year later did class 1, passed both first time thanks to the road transport industry training board which had a school in Carlisle…
it was a weeks course each time with the test the following week…
best bit was , it was paid for by the government at the time… 1977 and 1978…
they might want to re-consider bringing that idea back to life if there is such a huge shortage of drivers…
Do you remember the instructor’s name who took you in Carlisle by any chance?

crikey… the instructor for one of the courses was Jock… ( he had a 12 inch wooden ruler for knuckle bashing if you kept your hand on the gear stick after changing )
Alan Causer was also a trainer there , and a Mr McCubbin was in charge…
I haven’t seen Alan for a while… last time I saw him he was doing a bit of agency driving for NFT
my class 3 test was with the feared Mr Dixon…
my class 1 was with a Mr Wells who had come over from Newcastle to cover for Mr Dixon while he was off sick…

Don’t remember a Jock.
In 79 Jack Fearon was in charge I think (although the name McCubbin does ring a bell) it was Eddie who took me, a cracking bloke, but can’t for the life of me recall his surname. Another guy was George Nicholson. Both Eddie and Jack died.
Alan Causer at that time was an owner driver with a Volvo F7 with a tipper trailer, I think he trained as a sideline at that time. He must be a good age now.
I also remember Dixon, he was a Grade 1 too at. He went out of his way to make his test candidates uneasy and nervous, no mercy was shown.
I think I got a Wells also, that name is familiar too. Dixon was on holiday and I was sent for my test to Dumfries.
chicane:
Trained with Caroline Clapperton in the 70s. My training days were, check the livestock stock before driving from Dumfries to Galashiels, spend the day in an artic on all the wee awkward roads and Border touns, then drive back home check/feed the livestock. Can’t remember how many days it took but I could do those kinds of days back then
