How bad is the A1(M) roadworks?

Doing a run from Birchanger Services to Stirling starting at 15:30 later this week. Would you guys:

1/ Run up the A1(M), across the A66 then up the M74…or

2/ Up the M11, across the A14 then pick up the M6?

Some has said avoid the A1(M) if you can, others say it’s bearable. But then the M6 will be heavy until M62? Needs to be a smooth run as there will be a head office copilot.

Any thoughts?

A1/A66/M74/M73/M80

The A1 is the way to go, however, you would normally need a break on the 66. Starting at 1530 means Cambridge at the start of the rush hour. You could struggle to hit the 66, so check for any night closures which may start when you finish your break then make a decision from there

Appreciated as always guys, thanks.

The roadworks on the A1 from leeming to Barton are 12 miles long, coming off at the A66 will cut that by a mile or so. Been through at all times of the day & it usually takes around 16-17 mins depending on what loon doing 40-45 you get stuck behind.
Also take into consideration the the Appleby horse fair has just been on so you could catch some remnants of that in the form of horse drawn carriages. The later in the week you go the better it should be.

A14 and M6 would be my route of absolute last resort. Catthorpe seems terrible at the moment, there is often some kind of problem near Middlewich plus you’d be running through Birmingham and the roadworks near Stafford at around the tail end of the rush starting at the time you say.

Don’t even think of going that way - it’s miles out of your way and you’d hit all the roadworks along the M6 as well as Catthorpe. It might even be quicker (if the A1 was severely delayed or closed) to use the M62, M61 and M6 than go that way, but unless you have warning of severe delays or a closure on the A1 then go via Scotch Corner.

(And if you left Birchanger at 3:30, you’d be well past Cambridge by 5pm, though you might hit some delays around Huntingdon.)

Been driving through them most nights and the odd teatime rush hour. The A1 roadworks are a non-issue. They add maybe 5 minutes to the journey between Leeming Bar and Scotch Corner. Anyone who says avoid them probably hasn’t driven through them or are one of those drivers who always has to be sat on the limiter.

Yep no problem with those A1 roadworks, the ones at team valley though are absolute torture and to be avoided at all costs

Btw i realise the O/P wont be using them but thougt i would mention it anyway

Why? Does the HO bod need to be proved right that transport always run smoothly?

The A1 is definitely the way to go, but a part of me thinks A14/M6 and hit Brum when you don’t want to -

just to show how smoothly :unamused: things can run.
