How about truck racing at Rockingham

Hi, I have just come back to trucknet after a few years away and found this forum. I live in Corby the home of Rockingham raceway and I would love to see trucks racing around the oval. Has anyone tried to organise a meet? what do you think of it? I recon that something like this would prove very popular.

Why not leave proper racing to cars and motorcycles? rather than destroy another good racetrack.

Donington Park is still recovering after the track was totally wrecked by trucks

Sorry Wheel nut, I was not aware that there had been problems at Donnington. All I see is a race track not being fully used and the sight of trucks going round the oval seemed like a good idea.
From what I hear locally, Rockingham has been taken over by a business consortium who have bought the surounding land to build houses on and will restrict race meetings to just a handful a year because of the noise.

Watch this space. Big things are planned for 2006, with two circuits having asked for the trucks to race at their tracks.

Trucks are one of the biggest ticket sellers in motorsport and the weekend is packed with action.

So this will put the mith to the fact that trucks damage the circuits. We used to but now we don’t. We had to stop racing at Donington due to the investment on the track edges for the bikes. For Wheel Nuts information the Track was NOT “totally wrecked by trucks”.

Brands have asked the trucks back also and we race there in November after a 10 year break.

Good news many thanks

If what you say is true about truck racing selling more tickets than other motorsport, than why are Donington Park not inviting you back, the reason is that the track surface was damaged, and without the efforts of DPRAC and many of the officials, it would have been just another bumpy track, Donington have almost sold out of 3 day event tickets for this weekends Moto GP, they regularly get crowds of 80.000 and there are big plans to extend the bike racing calendar. There were many bike races stopped at Donington because of the condition of the track after truck racing

Silverstone will need some sort of spectacle as they are still in great danger of losing its only moneyspinner, the British Grand Prix.

If you Read the quote I said " Trucks are ONE of the biggest ticket sales". Yes You are correct bikes are also one of the biggest ticket sellers especially at Donnington. Thats why they havehad to invested millions into the track over the 3 year period to keep them there

It would be interesting if you could provide any information backing up your last comment that you also made which follows “There were many bike races stopped at Donington because of the condition of the track after truck racing.”
The truck race meeting were held at the end of the season. The very last race of the year.

I am not getting into a slagging match over this as you are entittled to your opinions and you obviously don’t like truck racing. However there are plenty of people out there who do !!! It is also comments from people like the above that give the the reconised sport by the FIA and MSA the bad publicity.

Truck racing throughout Europe is held on bike tracks(Assen), which started 2 years ago: and major F1 tracks and there has never been any complaints from the circuit owners. Maybe the problems is with the bad workmanship in the building and preperation / maintenance of some British circuits.[/b]

I dont want a slanging match either, but common sense says that a racing bike capable of 210mph and weighing less than 200kg isnt going to damage a race track when it drops down the hill at the old hairpin or craner curves.

The racers on these bikes are millimetre perfect to sustain these speeds. I spoke to a couple of lads who used to race at DP before a vast amount of money was spent on resurfacing the track and they agreed that trucks are too heavy for the surface, the trucks leave too much slippery rubber on the track and the kerb edges get broken up which means the riders cannot clip the apex to gain those vital 1.000;s of a second.

You are right, I dont like truck racing, I like looking at the very clean shiny trucks in a race paddock doing what they do best, pulling hospitality units and race transporters

But hey! everyone is entitled to their opinion eh?

I still can not see why the bike racers can say we mess the surface up of the track with oil and tyre rubber. In the early days yes, but now there are very strict guidelines and rules. We are not allowed to race several weeks before any bike races and as a rule we race after the bikes have. Like at DP we raced at the very last race weekend of the year.

The best thing is Wheelnut is that we’ll agree to disagree.
