So after many weeks of jumping through hoops to please the dvla and sourcing the funds to train and passing theory tests, today I have booked my Cat C training with Peter Smythe’s guys.
Since then, I have been trying to find a hotel/b&b to stay at for less than what the round trip would cost in go-juice (about £50 per day) - I live too close to fall under the free residential offer. Have looked at some until I ended up going around in circles confusing myself.
Breakfast and free wifi would be a bonus
Just wondering if anyone on here has any suggestions please?

I thought Peter had a place lined up which he recommends to those staying over …
Very pleasant ■■■■■■■ the phone there said I lived too close for the offer. If all else fails I could ring back and ask her if there is one she could recommend.
Peter Smythe does have a decent B&B place he uses, just a few miles from his centre.
Even if you don’t qualify for a free stay, I am sure Peter would give you info and possibly even get it for you at his agreed rate.
I stayed there and the room and food quality was good, especially the breakfasts. On the day of my test the lady said, “Hope we don’t see you again”. I hope she meant "good luck, rather than a reflection on my eating and snoring habits.
Firstly, apologies. IMO you should have been given this information straight away. I just hope that the staff didn’t realise you needed the info.
We have used Jug and Glass at Langwith for a number of years. It’s got very good, basic, food. The downside is that some have said it’s not too warm in winter. (up to 20 minute drive from training centre)
We also use Travelodge at Mansfield. (less than 10 minute drive from training centre) The Clifton Hotel, Mansfield has also been used. Not classy, but reasonable cost and folks are always happy there. This is the only one within walking distance of the training centre.
We don’t get a special rate at any of these so I cant help you further on those lines.
Apologies once again if we haven’t reached our normal service standards.
Depending how much notice/the earlier you book the better, try- travelodge.co.uk/?gclid=CITR … wwod3DUAiw
(there’s one at Mansfield, about 3 miles from Peter Smythe’s, I just googled it for next week & its £38 per night, room only, if you book it for march, its about £23 per night)
or you could try-http://www.premierinn.com/
Theres one at Mansfield (8 miles away) room only/saver rate, again the sooner you book the cheaper it is (from £29 per night)
Both chains are usually connected to a restaurant, so you can get breaky for between £5 & £8 ish, or just pig out on Maky D’s.
I just booked 4 rooms for 9 members of family visiting MK on a Saturday in March for £116, rooms only.
Edit- Sorry, Peter beat me to it, whilst I was writing this.
To be honest I would be quite happy commuting each day, I think I must have given the ■■■■■■■ the phone this impression too, but the Mrs insisted I try and work out which worked out cheaper.
Depends what days/times your doing whether it suits you to stay over. I live 68 miles away from PSTT and it worked out as a 90min commute each way to do a 3.5hr lesson which I was fine with, If i’d stayed in a hotel I would have gone bored trying to find things to do for the other 9-10 hours of the day- i’m just that type of person. My fuel costs were about £15 a day v’s a hotel at circa £30 a night so it made sense that way too.

Got a caravan! …now there’s a thought!!
Pete
Indeed.
Think my fuel costs will run approx £35-40 a day rac route planner says 83miles or so each way. Slightly more than travel lodge so looking likely will end up there. Boredom will be an issue as wont pay extra for wi-fi … this isn’t the stoneage.
