Got to agree,a great photo.

If that was Piffy then I got a lift home in that truck from Swiss. Good bloke, John. I worked with him on Breda . He suffered badly from post traumatic stress after the Wally Stop incident .
Hope he’s ok ?

I think that there was a gas explosion and fire and John Piff went in and rescued some people don’t know any more than that but Harry may know more details

Him and another English driver were at the Wally Stop on a Sunday in the truck park. Wally Stop was a shanty built place and gas had been leaking into the cellar for days when it suddenly went up. John and ex Royal Marine rushed in to save the families that were in there. The sights they saw were v. traumatic…people with their heads blown off. They dragged many people out and were given a bravery medal by the King of Belgium. All went well until Esther Ransen decided to do a Hearts of Gold gig on it. They filmed John happily playing golf when a Magnum rolls up with his mate in it. John has a nervous breakdown and hits the bottle. They gave him a tape of the show which he used to sit in his cab with a bottle of hooch and watch over and over again . The other driver died soon after ,I believe.
If I have got this wrong feel free to make corrections.

Circa 18 June 1995.

That was obviously a very brave and courageous deed by both of those drivers but what a sad, sad story

Thanks for sharing that, Harry

John was on Breda at the time and the last time I saw him was in Maroc. He had lost all confidence. The boss of Breda told me to stick with him for all his collections in Maroc, which was hard work when I also had my truck to load at the same time. He hated the Maroc run and only liked the Tunis run. When he first came back to work Breda thought that they would give him an easy run. So they gave him the first airfreight job they had ever done to Maroc (and last) The customs got confused with airfreight on a truck and he sat on a deserted part of Casablanca airport on his own for three days!

Rex Trotman did employ more than one driver but it could well be John, as iirc he had the ENGLAND plate on the unit for whoever he was driving for.
When Trotmans finished i think he did a stint for Syms of Calne and then Breda.
For the record, the last time i spoke to him was in the truckstop at Gent about 8 years ago when he was on for H+S.
As we hail from the same neck of the woods,i will get my sherlock hat on.

That’s good news.
