Hi first time to post here. As a Holt Lane driver from 1973 till the near end it would be good to hear from all those who I may have known.
Either from HL or BICC or the many I played cards with in the old digs anyone remember Mrs Fairweather’s. Those were great times no sleeper cabs.
Ginger I didn’t know any Holt Lane Transport drivers but i remember them from years ago with the Atki wagon and drags running out of BICC Prescot and BICC at Helsby (I think).
I remember Brian Platt who was a driver at Holt Lane Tpt,he lived in Prescot and was working as a shunter/chargehand for Taylor Barnard in Suttons yard around 1985-1990
JR
nice to know Holt Lane is remembered.
Chris, were you a driver at the time and if so may I ask who with, you never know we could have shared digs and a few pints anyway.
Out of interest I went to Fred Clarkes for a bit and finished my driving at United Biscuits.

ginger,I started driving in 1968 when I came out of the RAF and was on tankers from 1970 working for A.E.Evans with MK3 and MK5 AECs 8-leggers and eventually promoted to Ergo-cabbed Mandators as I had automatically qualified for my HGV licence, jumping the queue so to speak.
I remember Holt Lane Transport because they ran drawbars like Ashworths from Bradford and several others who could be seen on the A580 East Lancs.
I finished up driving drawbars myself in the late 70s and early 80s - proper “A” frame stuff by the way . I had the benefit of power steering but at least I didn’t have a trailer lad cadging ■■■■ off me.
Yes,we could have been drinking together. Most of mine would have been in South Wales,Grangemouth area,Teesside or Essex.
Which United Biscuits depot was it?
By the way BICC at Helsby was a good drop.I did it regular from BP Chemicals at Hull.

Hiya mate I remember HLT in Whiston,I never worked for them but always remember thinking those cable reels were going to roll off,and sometimes they did ha ha. A mate I have been working with a lad who worked there for a while,Tony Parry and I believe his Dad did as well. I aint seen Tony for about six months but he used to ride shotgun with his Dad when he was a kid(he may not have driven for them, hes a bit younger than me) I think he worked for Suttons as well and he is a smashing lad.
Hi! Bigpeter53
Thanks for your reply I knew tony parry’s dad, night loading in the BICC for Holt Lane I knew a lot of drivers from Suttons in the 70’s but not over a lot of years, as when Holt Lane closed I worked for United Biscuits at Widnes and then Worsley until I retired. Safe driving hope to speak to you again.

That is a good name for someone who worked at a biscuit factory. When I worked for Halton Council I used to do a few laps of that yard in Ditchfield Rd,in the gritter, when it was icy.Used to get a box of biscuits off the mush. There were some dolly birds in there, but also some dragons. One of them had a go at me one day, saying I should be salting around her mothers house in Huyton. That would be hard for a Halton council worker, but she wouldn’t have it.
Hello just signed on to site and found your post my dad worked for Holt Lane his name is Brian Stockley he drove Leyland comets. He left there and went to the BCR .He took me with him when he drove for Holt Lane i loved the Leyland comets and Super comets his last one was ATE 733L, He also went to school with Brian Platt and i also worked with him at Taylor Barnards.
Well i have only just joined this site and started to look around as you do and i find Holt Lane drivers never die,it took me back over 40 years to see names from my past as i worked there around 1965/66 as a trailer man did a spell with Stan Hunter but we never hit it off together he is in retirement living in north wales so i am told by his grandson,I moved from Stan to Keith Sidder a younger driver he did not send you with a bucket to find water when we were waiting to unload and to start washing a eight wheeler & drag or to go around the vehicle painting any rusty parts you found he would go off to find a betting shop and leave the wagon for me to see to ,I did see a picture must be around 25 yrs back in a trucking mag the vehicle we had (213 STF) i think i was in a vintage show ,this wagon and its crew were very lucky to reach old age but that story for another day,by for now.
Gingernut nice to be in contact again after all this time about 17 yrs since we worked together at U.B. widnes and many more years since holt lane ,must get in touch with each other .

This reminds me of when I started as a second man collecting foriegn milk bottles from various dairies. If a new driver started I had to show them the ropes etc. I had one guy who thought I was the slave,we went to a dairy in Liverpool which was plastic crates and I more or less done the job on my own, even roping up.But then we went to Goodwins in Whitchurch which were iron crates,he expected me to do all the graft. We had a bit of a toe to toe and I ended up getting a lift back to Widnes.I went back to work and the driver was waiting. We had the third degree from the manager which resulted in the driver leaving,he actually told the manager that he was just a chauffeur and wouldn’t handball empty milk bottles. The lazy git.

Have posted a couple of Holt Lane Transport pictures on the Northwest Trucks web site.Paul
Great shot of RTJ 940C on your web site - sadly, here it is at the front of the graveyard where so many ended up. I believe that Walsh & Dearden cleared the site, although several Atkis did escape and survive into new ownership.
