HMRC night out allowance

coffee, my sentiments too. but if a driver is poorly paid and then gets the max n out money thats better for the driver init

FLIP:
Each tax area/office will look at individual operations/circumstances & reach a local agreement with the company & union (if applicable) concerned.
For example back in the early 90’s I worked for a company which dealt with Stafford tax office, our maximum allowance was £18.50 whilst friends of mine who were working in another area were on £20 max.
I believe the £24,50 is a national guideline.
Where I work now they have an agreement of £33 with our tax office (that’s UK nights out btw) unfortunately it used to be £35 but that was reduced around 4 years ago by £2 for some reason! Still fine by me though,4 nights out per week is a nice little bonus, they also allow £37 for non-sleeper cabbed vehicles on nights out but as the company don’t run any day cabs that’s pretty irrelevant.
Contact your local tax office, you may need to actually make an appointment to speak to someone & they will sort it out. By local tax office that wont neccesarily be the one in the area where you live. The office concerened will be the one your employer deals with.

The local area do not set the rates now, it is a nationally agreed rate throughout

No, No and Thrice No

Wages are paid for the work you do, subsistence is paid to subsidise you for having to sleep in a lorry cab, do extra washing, replace worn bedding and having to buy two meals extra each day.

Try buying a house on the strength of your night out allowance

+1
including night out money in wages has always, happened ditto overtime.
What sets a job out to be a good one is the money you get for working an equivalent week to the majority of the other workforce.

Whilst x’s and o/t are very welcome to most of us, they should never be considered part of the wage

I get £20 a night and its lumped in with all of my other pay so I pay tax on that as well :frowning:

That’s not right is it,do they not know how to do your pay properly or are they lazy?

If I have it right then your employer will be paying extra contributions on your night out money doing it that way so you are both losing.
If you have 4 nights out a week £320p/m,nearly a drivers wages…tell them they are paying unnecessary stamp on what almost equates to another wage and they may take another look.

Do I have this right?
More informed people than I will tell me if I’m wrong or not.

Its right, if you have the same “problem” as we had in this area some years ago, our local HMRC were very aggressive, and, if you wanted them off your case, you paid it via the wages :open_mouth:

Any form of “cash” payments are distrusted by HMRC, they will give you plenty of hassle if they think they smell something iffy, even when its quite legit…

Infact, any un-taxed income is viewed as “iffy” by HMRC, beware, they are on a mission, and they do not take prisoners

i have to disagree.
i’ve done very well over the years earning a crap weekly wage, plus subsistence living allowance, plus meal allowance, plus expenses. more in my pocket, less in the tax mans pocket.

My salary at LCS was crap. Nights out made the difference between a Pot Noodle and Chinese take away on a Friday! No, nights out shouldn’t be seen as part of a wage. But it all helps.

cheers

vern, thats what i was saying ffs. so why is it that 95% of firms pay you less night out money.

and ■■■■ right night out money should not be paid as or in with the wage. ie taxed.

only two weeks ago i asked about a job, wages were crap, but they guy said but you will get £15 night out money which makes it a decent wage,

£6.50 ph a decent wage…

no thanks i will stay on the dole pal. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I get £22 per night out paid in cash with my payslip the following week. Night out money and expenses (parking tolls etc) are all paid in cash the following week and are not shown anywhere on the payslip.
If we are away on a Saturday…very rare occurance once in 10 years for me, a couple of the other drivers have had 2 or 3 in that time…we get a double payment (£44).

In the mid 90s on a different firm I was getting £27 per night but that was on euro work.

I would much rather have more tax free “expenses” than pay the tax man thank you very much

Well it turn out that I don’t pay tax on my night out allowance as I thought

Its not obvious at all on my pay slip but the boss took me through it and alls good.

Mind you I’m glad I checked as otherwise I would have been none the wiser if I hadn’t read this thread

We have to fill a form in each week listing our expenses and where we have taken our night out. at the bottom is a declaration we have to sign about fraudulent expense claims and HMRC.
