My Grandfather never took a test in his life and drove till well into his 80s in the mid 70s.
But really what test do they have today? Theory perhaps but most of that is rubbish. Then take a test on the smallest car they can,and have no experience of any size vehicle & turn into danger on road.
In my opinion all tests should be on Ford transit size vehicles and part of the test should be taking a telephone call on a hand held mobile phone at 90 mph on a motorway. This rubbish of not taking calls on a phone was thought up by non- drivers or should be non-drivers. Instead of banning people for using their phone they should ban people who are incapable of using their phone.
One of my ex gaffers, who was a partner in the haulage company that I last drove for, never took a test either and you only rode with him once! He only ever drove a car (thank heavens!) and set off in whatever gear the gearbox was in when he stopped previously with the clutch almost on fire, he sat above the handbrake in the centre of the car and rarely wore his seat belt despite being pulled by the law several times. He certainly scared me, his business partner had warned me about him but still let me experience one of the Death Ride’s myself!!
I liked him as a boss though, even though he made me redundant and thought that a 50 pence coin bought you the world, and was sad when he passed away in his eighties. His funeral, at Wirksworth church, was very well attended as a lot of local hauliers knew him well and he was quite a character.
Pete.

Funny thing this as when they were supplied we weren’t into trucks as most Ford dealers.Kays in Derby did a lot of Traders that came from us as they were into trucks big time and they sold the one on the right I think and the left one I would think came from Stafford certainly Staffordshire. I went to do my National Service in 1959 and finished in 1961 but then dealers were getting into the swing of things.Good timing though as the Traders had a bit of timing gear problems and cylinder liners leaking so when I started again eventually the job got cracking.I know Doug and his sister Carole and often have chat but never sold them anything but you can’t win 'em all.

One of my Brothers took that shot one Saturday afternoon Dan, no time to ■■■■ about washing it,got it greased and made ready for Sunday worked it bloody hard for the time I had it and it only let me down once when the gearbox failed coming down Orton Scar, but I very quickly got a secondhand one and was back on the road next day working hard. But that sort of work wasn’t for me so as soon as I found an “A” licence for sale I sold the little Trader for what I had paid for it and bailed out ! Cheers Dennis.
What about NRC95 Tony ,is that a local reg ? (Trader drop side ) .

Its a Derby Reg Dan, Regards Larry.
Couple of things I notice - one is that Dennis is wearing (underneath the boilersuit - now why wasn’t that returned to Brady’s when you left…) the trademark of ‘all the young dudes’ in the late sixties - a black T shirt with a white shirt on top!
Also - we all ‘posed’ for photos, usually holding onto a part of the truck, often this had an unfortunate look to it!
Here’s one of me!
‘Are you now, or have you ever been…’ No, I bloody well haven’t, it’s just the way I’m standing! Oh, God, look at the flares as well!
