A friend of mine is upping sticks and moving to spain. They’re looking at all options to get their stuff there and have asked if it’s possible to hire a small lorry and have me drive it all over there. If no money changes hands, where do I stand on this?
Fine so long as the MGW does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Above that nobody will hire you one unless you have an O licence.

From what I’ve found, that’s not the case for private use.
“It is the Customer’s responsibility to ensure that valid Operator’s licences are in place where applicable”
“For commercial/Business use the customer requires a valid operator’s licence where applicable and their own Business Insurance”
nationwidehireuk.co.uk/terms-conditions/
Since this is private use, it looks like that’s not the case.
Looks like I’ll be bound by tacho regs though!
“also tacho cards will be required for buses and trucks”
99% sure Harry’s right, you’d need a O licence. At the very least i’d think a Restricted O licence as that allows you to carry your own goods but not anyone elses.
Maybe just shipping the stuff over would work out cheaper anyway, i’ve taken a few 20/40ft boxes to a removals company nearby, that’d fit more in than a rigid or 7.5t anyway.
Stick the job on Anyvan.com . I saved a bundle coming back from France compared to removal companies.
Sorry mods not advertising just recommending on past experiences.
Not connected to above in any way.
Nice one, cheers guys.
Not knocking ,but if you go down the lines of "ANY VAN " please read there view before so !
I used this outfit to come the other way, checkout all replies & reviews.
We had a right result using Shiply and saved around a grand, for sure that will not always be the case but costs nothing to check what is on offer & bye whom.

Depends what they are taking but heavy smallish stuff in some dolavs and send them on a pallet service, about £120 a go if you can be flexible over time. I guess furniture is the awkward thing although I think they will take pallets up to 1.8m high. A 3.5t luton is going to come to a lot for hire / ferry fare / tolls / fuel. Depends on access at the Spanish end as well I suppose, flat or a house ?
I’d be tempted ring salford van hire etc and ask.
If they say need an o licence why not ask where you work. If they could hire it and you pay them back?

Then the company name is on hire certificate, and if anything goes wrong… plus try telling Douane etc that you don’t need a permit because it’s private use etc…etc…
Not impossible, but awkward.
Sell everything and buy new.
New house new start, new stuff.
I hired a 7.5 t to go to Greece no problem - only one restriction and that was to avoid the old Yugoslav territories, which wasn’t a problem as I was going Ancona/Patras anyway.
Should have said O licence not required as it was a personal house move, didn’t get stopped until shipping back into Poole and that was just a quick search and a couple of questions.
Some years ago I hired a 7.5T to move to Southern Ireland, at that time (2008) the one and only company who would hire out a vehicle to leave the country was Ryder

There is.
It’s the part of Ireland which isn’t Northern Ireland.

and in true irish fashion it stretches all the way up to malin in donegal which is more northernly than northern ireland.

Usually even 7.5 tonners aren’t rented for private use let alone HGV.The hire company also doesn’t insure such vehicles it’s the hirer’s responsibility to insure it and have an O licence before the rental company will even consider renting it out.
While insurers won’t insure a truck for less than a yearly policy.

Polar Opposite. Everything has an Opposite. Northern Ireland - Southern Ireland
West of Ireland - East of Ireland
Polarity -Opposites attract except in Ireland. The people are Non Polar.
