Highways Agency impact trucks

are those trucks actually designed to stop and absorb the impact of a vehicle hitting its rear box?? saw one yesterday and on the side it said “max impact 100 kph” would that stop a truck then or it designed for smaller vehicles if the worst happened?? :open_mouth: :open_mouth: must have some major shock absorbers built into that rear box to protect the ha driver from whip lash?

Won’t stop a LGV - might help a very very little

the one i saw one had an big extra bit bolted on to the back of the truck with a gap between the box and the rear of the truck were the lights are.

But when they are “working” isn’t the big box (where it says Highways Agency) then folded out to absorb the impact ?
Wouldn’t want to hit it as it is in that picture … that’s for travelling

I would think A fully loaded arctic at 56mph, would just push it out of the way.

If anyone is intrested highwaycare.co.uk/

I agree i dont think it would stop an artic!!!

No it won’t stop an artic at 56mph, I don’t think there’s much that will, it will stop a car though, but even a car at 70mph makes a mess of both the car and the crash cushion, usually pushing the Incident Support Unit (ISU) a good few yards up the road, it does however cushion the impact to both the occupants of the car and the guys in the ISU (if in it)
We’ve had a number of these ISU’s hit, both by cars and a 7.5ton recovery truck, apart from bent metal, everyone was relatively OK, were-as if it had been a solid vehicle, then I would believe the fatality count would have gone up somewhat.
I always wonder why drivers can’t see something that size, especially as it usually has a bloody great flashing arrow, or a “Blue & white 610 arrow” on the back of it.

Sounds like this is what you saw, Same thing, just a different make.

Now thats gonna give a canny big back end swing…

One of these had been hit on the A1 northbound, between Leeming Bar and Catterick yesterday (Thursday) morning. Road was closed, while they recovered it. Looked like a Salvesen wagon was also involved, but I don’t think the wagon hit the HA ISU vehicle…

From what i can gather once hit. when the crash cushion compresses. The air is dumped and all the brakes lock on all the way round and it won’t go far at all. I assume few are hit square on and most are corner impact.

There are pictures on youtube of them being whacked i think :open_mouth:

Here is a piccy of one that got hit by a car whilst in roadworks,
obviously the impact frame that deploys has been raised again to get it removed .

Unfortunately, of the three guys working on this truck, one hasn’t pulled through. The other two, as well as the LGV driver, are bruised but ok.

The truck did indeed hit the ISU truck, at pretty much full speed.

Not really push, with an LGV the truck tends to “ride” over the top of the cushion and into the main working area on the back of the truck, so much so that that it can reach the cab of the IPV.

Stay safe out there folks.
