Higher minimum speed limit on the motorway? Any thoughts?

we should be allowed to do 60mph on the motorway in trucks would solve problems of passing slow cars that get scared to let artics passed

acording to the highway code you can do 60 MPH on motorways
look here…The Highway Code - General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders (103 to 158) - Guidance - GOV.UK

you just need a hill :unamused:

Can anyone confirm that this minimum motorway speed limit is another myth? AFAIK there’s no such thing.

You may be getting confused with the speed a vehicle has to be capable of to use a motorway. I think it is 25MPH, but i stand to be corrected i doknow it is a slow speed they have to be capable of.

slightly off topic but is it illegal for 3 trucks to occupy 3 of say 4 lanes on a motorway?

LGVs may not use the outer lane of a motorway that has 3 or more lanes.

You can legally use lane 5 of a 6 lane motorway if you like

Another myth - some LGVs think that you cannot use the 3rd lane of a 3 lane dual carriageway - but you legally can  - the outer lane restriction is only for motorways.

Third lane of a DUAL CARRIAGEWAY

That is also my recollection of the rule.

It used to be a form of standing joke that a JCB GT could be driven on the Motorway. Which, in those days, was the Mk III. (IIRC).

delboytwo:
The MINIMUM legal speed on a UK Motorway is 50mph unless it is subject to a Variable Speed control [M25 SW section], roadworks control or just plain normal traffic flow

Not sure you are correct on this, as I don’t know anybody who’s been done for climbing Windy Hill or Ainley’s on the M62 at less than 50mph

Just what i was thinking howatsi. Pretty steep up Windy Hill esp. from the Lancashire side… and that’s if you get it right. We’ve all been guilty of day dreaming & not getting her down in the box soon enough and ofcourse with a fully freighted truck, once you’ve lost that momentum, you can’t get it back.

(tip, when you see the houses through the trees on the left, time to start getting the revs up).

As for cars (why so often MIcras?) doing 50 - 54 on the flat. Grrrr :imp: :smiling_imp: :imp: :smiling_imp:

i know but why limit us to 56 or even less, just let us do the speed we are allowed to.

and the minimum limit on the motorway is 50mph, i remember it from when i was learning to drive a car etc

Where is our resident “specialist contributor” when you need him!

There is no minimum speed limit on the motorways, if there was, you would see a circular sign with a blue background with the minimum speed limit in white digits, I haven’t seen one of those for a long time!

Personally I dont think there should be a min speed limit on the motorway. If car drivers aren’t confident enough to do 70 then they shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near one. And whats the point of 60mph on a motorway for trucks when most of us are restricted to 55/56mph and even slower it seems for some supermarket drivers?? Or are they on a go-slow cos of decent hourly rate■■? Anyways, the speed limit is there for a reason so if its safe to do so please do it

If all trucks could do 60mph vast majority of drivers would because the could, company fuel bills would increase etc. so i imagine that why trucks are limited for that reason  :exclamation: But i have seen some lorry’s that are more than capable of doing 60 mph and have over took me when i have been doing close to 60 mph - and it seems more and more to be new trucks.

regarding the supermarkets from what i have learnt they have fuel bonus system which may exaplain the relaxed speeds you see, but not sure on their hours

Does any one actually drive one that can do 60mph on the flat?

No that’s not the reason, its an EU thing, to come into line with other countries at 90kph. Just the same as you can no longer buy groceries in pounds and ounces. On second thoughts, I think that’s wrong, its actually 85kph +/- 5% Someone (Neil?)will be along presently to correct me.

But i have seen some lorry’s that are more than capable of doing 60 mph and have over took me when i have been doing close to 60 mph - and it seems more and more to be new trucks.

Driving home from work on the M6 last Sunday afternoon doing, err, 70 ish  i noticed it was taking me some time get by a Volvo FH artic. I don’t remember the co., but do remember it was quite new. Once clearly past him, i backed off to about 65 just to try and guage what he was doing. Well, beggar me, i had to do 70 to keep out of his way!

Also, some companies have more recently, due to the fuel price, had their limiters set lower to 52 or 50. Makes a big saving fuel wise accross a large fleet over a year.

im pretty sure there was a limit of 5 when i learnt to drive a car and this was only back in 2003, you see a white background sign saying 70 because thats the limit, if folk only saw a 60 limit as the slowest how fast do you really think they would go?

also ive had some idiot doing 40 in a car pull out infront of me to pass a 7.5 tonner which was clearly going faster than him, i was in my car at that point doing about 80 (sue me)
biggest fright of my life and my tyres got a wake up call aswell,
and before you start thinking it was an old person, it wasnt it was some kid.

basically if you cant do 65mph ont he motorway in a car yous houldnt be allowed anywhere near a motorway and should have a restricted licence. even my grandad can stick to 70mph and hes 85 years old.

hi all hope this helps
was driving a bedford cf loton on the m5 3 years ago and was stoped by the plod as i was only doing 45mph(the van was old ) the officer said that the minum speed was 50mph on motorways and he said that you may only drive slower if dirceted to by signs and he used Variable Speed control [M25 SW section], roadworks control as an exsample.

he let me off as the van was old and slow

My wife uses one motorway (the m55).
She uses it to go shopping in Preston.
She will only use the first lane and sits behind an artic until she gets to her junction.
So her minimum and maximum speed is the same as the truck in front of her.

I asked her to meet me once at Bolton services (m61).
I was sat in my cab thinking “where the [zb] is the silly [zb]”.
So i phoned up and my son answered. “where the [zb] are you?” i asked politely.
“I don’t [zb] know dad, But mums’ crying”.

So everytime i come across an idiot going too slow, I relax and think they must be in the same gang as my missus.

I’ve never heard of this alleged 50 mph minimum speed on motorways.

In 16 years of driving my preserved Bristol bus on britains roads including motorways I have never had any hassle. The maximum speed of the bus is about 48 mph.

I used to own a double deck bus which did 33mph flat out and that was used on motrways. Highlight was when I overtook a police car doing about 20 mph on the M1 once.

Service buses also use motorways and some them will do less than 50 mph.

The only minimum speed signs I have seen are in the Dartford tunnel. There are also some signs on the A45 around Northampton banning “slow vehicles” from a flyover. Sign then defines a “slow vehicle” as one capable of less than 25 mph.

Calv

It was only a few months back that a women was banned from driving for going too slow on a motorway.

So there is a minimum, But i don’t know what it is.

The maximum limit for cars is 70mph, So it should be the same for trucks.

Driving without due care and attention is the offence for driving to slow for the road/traffic flow conditions depending on how your driving is affecting other road users.
Motorway Rules

No Slow Vehicles (under 30MPH)
