HIAB question

I have a Lorry Loader certificate issued by the Institute of Vehicle Recovery from when i used to do Recovery work using HIAB’s and Vehicle removal frames (think car cradle on the end of a HIAB).

Would this be accepted by builders merchants for HIAB work?

Also, its from 1997, does it have to be renewed? It has no expiry date on it.

How much is a HIAB cert to get these days?

It depends, it should count in your favour as it is experience. At worst it’s a simple job of them getting you certified and up to date.

It’ll be cheaper for them than training someone from scratch.

It can’t hurt to ask.

You would need to have familerisation training using the brick grab

It should state what type of HIAB you can useon your certificate, ive just had my papers renewed a couple of weeks back and its got hook and brick grab only, it was a ALLMI accredited course lasted one day as it was a refresher £199.00 plus VAT, a lot different to when I last did the course but very educational.

The Hiab Certificate lasts ?

Well that Depends on the accrediting body

According to the Approved code of practise issued by the health and safety executive it is a recomendation that you do a refresher every 3 years

The same applies to Fork Lift Certificates.

Some training companies put an expiry date on the certificates … with the acredditing body we use they frown on companies who do this.
( they do this To get more of your hard earned money.)

It is also recomended that if you do not use the machinary you are trained on for a long period you should have a refresher ( recomended )

A training company will recomend that you take a refresher every 3 years but is is not a legal requirement.

Some companies refresh their machine operaters to keep insurance premiums low.

Ask yourself a question when you pass your LGV test you do not need a refresher do you .

If you do not drive your car for 15 years do you need a refresher .

Burnie1, AFAIK a HIAB licence means you can legally operate ANY type of lorry-mounted crane, with or without attachments; it is entirely up to the individual company (or more to the point their insurers) whether or not you need specialist training on specific atachments.

For example, I did my HIAB ticket when I was with Owens, just an ordinary crane with slings. It was OK for Jewsons, Travis Perkins, Frazers and a few others, all of whom I worked for via Driver Hire, and all of whom used brick grabs.

The duration of the licence can also vary I think; the general benchmark seems to be refresher every five years.

In answer to the OP I suspect you would need a refresher course.

This sort of thing comes up pretty regularly. When I took my RTITB counterbalance FLT licence back in 1992, the instructor told me that the licence was for life, but nowadays no reputable company will let you use the kit without a current (less than five year old) certificate. Problem is that there are many accredited training agencies, and unlike a driving licence there does not seem to be a common standard. Time there was IMHO.

My ALLMI card has an expiry date of 5 years from date of issue when I will need a refresher course. As above attachments are added as categories on the card as is use of remote controls.
Builders merchants vary, some want specific licences others will accept any recognised valid licence but these tend to be the smaller firms. Jewson’s now use “area drivers” who work via an agency but are qualified with ALLMI certification after attending week long course. They are very strict on these things now. The Saint Gobain parent group have introduced many new “rules” in the past few years.
