My approach to work.
much appreciated
All of the Moffet users around here Sig, Minster and Encon are all in the same line of work, insulation and dry lining/plasterboard deliveries usually to building sites, the majority of Hiab work is usually builders merchants although there are specialist Hiab âmachinery moverâ or cabin firms around, which are very hard to get a start on around here especially if you have zero experience, that usually seems to be word of mouth, i never see any advertising locally. My advice would be go for hiab as builders merchants always seem to want backsides on seats, so are more likely to give newbies a chance.
All jobs advertised in my locale ask for previous experience, Skips, tippers and even hiab (especially Manpower), you may have better luck in your own area though.
Have a look around and count the number of Moffetts against the number of Hiabâs out there. Hiabâs outnumber Moffetts by a large margin.
Ultimately a Moffett is just a forklift that hangs on the back whereas a Hiab is a type of crane which will / can involve working with slingers and signallers and doing all sorts of complex things.
Youâll also struggle to locate a company that offer training on Moffetts unless you have access to one.
Having said all that be warned that there is no hard and fast qualification for Hiabâs, you legally need no certification to operate any piece of plant including Moffetts and Hiabs just to have had instruction and be competent. Some companies will write their own training certs for their drivers whereas others will send their drivers to do a CPCS course which is the thing you need in the construction industry.
You could attend a training school for a couple of hours and get a bit of paper for a couple of hundred quid but you may be wasting your cash, alternatively you could spend a couple of grand and get the CPCS card and still not get any work so youâd be no better off.
Just remember that whilst adding qualifications may make you more employable, it is unlikely to make a massive difference to your potential earnings unless you get a lucky break.
Thanks guys
It seems really hard in every aspect of driving right now im waiting for a full time vacancy that pays around ÂŁ23000 pa but everywhere seems full hiab and or moffet was to just try and stand out but allready spending 2k on class 2 i really see you guys point, with class one looming over me someday. i dont wanna blow 5k with no perm i mean im really tryna make a good impression everywhere the agency sends me and i try and make good contacts within the company to keep in contact with, is ther any other advice you guys cud give wen it comes to landing a perm
dont know about hiabs, but i used to carry a moffett...tbh,i would
nt botherâŚjust something else to go wrong.â â â â weather and â â â â building sites for zero extra pay.
and another thingâŚyour planner will convieniently forget that your moffett weighs 2 and a half tonne, when sending you for a max weight back load.
