would black be permitted and accepted as a standard hiviz vest if it does receive the same grade as its yellow counterpart?I wear a black hi-vis sometimes, if you’re working against a white background black will contrast much better than yellow. I also think that we’re getting over exposed to yellow and are stopping noticing it as well. I’ve noticed that black really ■■■■■■ idiot office bods off too
At the warehouse I work from, there is a color code. The client’s people wear orange HiVis and the contractors/visitors, like us, wear yellow. So the FLT driver or whatever can see from a glance who is most likely to know where the truck is coming from, where the bogs are etc. An Orange HiVis, or a yellow one with Monsieur Dentressangles logo on it will most likely know the site like the back of its hand while any other yellow HiVis is a complete unknown.

At one place I work from there seems to be a competition of who has the best hi vis. No colour code just whatever colour matches your outfit. Strangest I’ve seen is brown.
the simple fact is that if you want to get noticed on any site then don’t wear a hivis, they will be all over you like flies on a turd

This is the approach that has worked for me for years, it has meant taking heat, but you can`t argue with it.
I am going to compose a statement and print it off and if I get challenged, I shall give them a copy of the statement, which will state my reasons for not wearing hi viz.

So you can keep track of approx 6 FLT drivers buzzing around everywhere, with the rain running down yer face and the wind trying to take the curtains from your grasp?
You are too good for this jobErrr No. IF there were 6 flt’s loading at the same time I would have the common sense to be nowhere near them or the truck.
So who is going to open your curtains for you?
I will, the moment they cant get anything else on the truck then all 6 of the notional flt’s will have to stop whilst I do my bit without the risk of getting trapped.
I realise there is a light hearted element to this thread but if any driver is prepared to risk opening/closing curtains whilst 6 flt’s are loading then he/she risks serious injury or death. Take it from someone who has seen and dealt with a fatal crush accident in the workplace, that its not something you ever want to suffer or even witness.
If you do then I can see where a waterproof high viz would come in handy as it would be quite effective in keeping all the body parts in one place to make clearing up easier.

Multiple trucks, needing 6XFLTs....If I was the only one, then there would have been 5 other FLT
s playing with themsleves
So in theory and in practice, I was not the only driver at risk.
To be ■■■■ about this, there should be an area set aside, where you open your curtains that is not accessible to FLT`s.
I might suggest this next time I am on the premises…

I had a barney with a bloke at Smiths News in Birmingham over something like this. He had tipped the off side of the trailer, leaving just the near side to do, which was closest to the doors that he was taking the load through. So I went off and started doing up the O/S curtains. “No no, you cant do! You stay there, I do trailer!” he said.
“Bolix to that,” was my response, “its my trailer, Ill do the curtains and posts thanks.” The argument went on that it wasn’t safe. My response was something along the lines of there is a ■■■■■■■ great trailer between me and the FLT which will protect me from any accidental mishap. However, if I am at risk we have a very serious issue. Lets face it, if he cant see a fat bloke in a red tee-shirt and high-vis, there are more problems than the side of the trailer I am standing on.
that sounds like a 2nd hand ticking off i had a while back. tipping a reefer off the tail end with a pump truck to FLT and apparently the manager wants me to remember my HIVIZ next time. im inside a box and when i am not in the trailer the FLT driver is not operating the FLT as he is checking the load and signing my lines. the only real risk is when he removes the pump truck as i have to hold it to stop it rolling away and i stand well to the side with the handle at my side at arms length. rules are rules but lets apply a wee bit of common sense and allowing people to take responsibility for their own actions
Reminds me of a pick up of an flt I did at a quarry some time ago I was dressed in yellow hi viz when I reported to the gate house only to be told that I had to undress and put on their orange wear instead
They were most upset when I returned their flt a week later and left it just outside their premises and dropped the keys on the desk and avoided all the hassle
I got sacked for not wearing mine last year, amongst other things.
The best one, STOBRATS appleton depot manager comes out of office shouting " where’s your hi viz drive? " same place as yours Richard head! " I reply! He gives it " get back to your cab and put it on " so I replied " what, to eat my lunch in the canteen? " strange but true, office bods eh?
Last year I got a bollocking for no high viz. wouldn’t mind but my high viz was covered in grease and crap and I had a bight pink t shirt on you could see from miles away.

As has been said, it’s only a coloured piece of nylon, if the flt driver can’t see it for whatever reason then it’s still going to sting like [zb] when the flt hits you.On the flip side, you Leary failed to see a bloody great flt so hardly all the fault of the flt driver.
I am always watching and listening for the flt when pulling back or strapping th curtains. As soon as I see it returning from wherever it is they go in the warehouse, I stop doing the curtains and wait for the flt to go to one side of the truck at which point I go nod work on the opposite side. Self preservation is a better protection than a high viz every time.
You must be Mr Perfect huh, why is he at fault? was the FL going to fast did he sound his horn etc? fact remains the FL should be more aware of his surroundings when the guy is opening the curtains and as rightly stated the wind the rain sheets blowing other FLs around makes it hazardous for the driver … but still the air bags on the hi-vi should of engaged!!
I used to go into Chep in Brisbane for empties, drop off/pick up. You couldn’t get anywhere near the ■■■■■■■ trailer without some git shouting at you. Learnt my lesson first time there, by sitting in the little shed so that when they wanted the curtains moved, I religously followed the little yellow lines around to get over and do the curtains. That’s when it didn’t matter so much about elf n safety, cos it was holding them up, but we have to keep annoying the pricks eh. The other thing there was that they’d stack 'em 18 high which was about 6 inches from the roof, then you were s’posed to get your straps over without killing yerself
I know it’s been said before, but how the ■■■■ did we get on before all this went so far.
i got pulled in a unnamed place for not having one on, i was wearing hivis bottoms!! i was told he cant see me, my reply was i cant see your legs
Deliver cable for the railway so wear full orange hivis t-shirts and trousers… got no choice over it.
If you don’t wear it and get hit by a motor/forkie in the yard, no payout.
I was due to tip bailes of paper up in Lancashire…it was one winter and snowing sleeting, so i put my yellow hi-vis coat on …had to wait to be called to weigh bridge…eventualy got on the wb, jobsworth security man pops his head out of his window put your hi-vis on ! i said wots this then a f…g wedding dress ? its got to be orange or you wont get tipped , i thought i was hearing things…pull out driver until you get an orange vest on…is this bloke ■■■■■■ or just the most annoying little twot here…i said its hi-vis its cold and snowing and ive got to stand at the back of the trailer while its tipped…another H+S RULE at this place, so i ring in ,my boss rings them to say i am wearing a regular hi-vis coat so wots your problem…ah its not orange we have wear orange here, he rings me back and says pull out and wait while i sort this out, an hour later the director of this company comes to me and says wots the problem ? ive no problem you have the problem your little hitler in the cabin says no orange hi-vis no tip…ah well just put one of our vests on over your coat… i just shook my head…with that i couldnt get this poxy vest on got nowt bigger so had to hang it round my neck just to please some ■■■■■■■■ ,first and last time i go there…are these people out of a comic book ?
