hi viz vests

Coffeeholic:
Richie you’re supposed to measure all the way round, not just the front half.

And what’s wrong with having a big belly, exactly…?

Nothing, you’re preaching to the converted here.

If you and I stood back to back at the moment one of us would look more heavily pregnant than the other and it wouldn’t be you.

On a related note my mate Mick got pulled up for wearing sandals in the yard last summer. The guy pointed at his feet and said “Those aren’t safety shoes” and Mick just walked straight past him saying, “They were good enough for Jesus.”.

And he rolled away a big stone and didnt hurt his toes

I think with every Tom ■■■■ and Harry wearing hi-viz ,the only person to stand out in a crowd is going to be the person who is not wearing one.
So it must be safer not to wear one.?

Why did someone start this thread, have they been watching my antics this week?

Im with the Bear I hate the dam things, although no one seems to realise they have many safety benefits, like airbags, grappling hooks and a shot of brandy.

They are a cure all for " its helf and safety mate innit"

I arrived at Hams Hall last week, “have you got a hi viz and boots drive?”

“Yes thanks” :stuck_out_tongue:

I cant let you iin till you put it on, I will put it on when you lify the barrier, and I will put my boots on too, You cant come in till you put them on. he repeated.

Well they are here in the passenger side, LHD truck. “put them on then”

I asked him if his mr’s lets him climb over the furniture at home in his gardening boots

Of course not he said, well I live in my truck and Im not climbing over my furniture in dirty boots either.

I think he realised he was losing this battle, and he raised the barrier and let me drive round to the office :open_mouth:

He then started the war, my hi viz vest is the wrong colour, (yellow) the manager wears a yellow vest, drivers have to wear orange vests :exclamation:

Im still seething, he did lend me a clean orange vest, and told me not to come back

Then there was this bloke on the ferry, eating his dinner in a hi viz vest. he then went to the cabin for a shower, and came back dressed in a hi viz vest…

I hate them

Slighty off topic but i once, and only once, loaded some sand from Gravesend. This sand came in 1.5 tonne bags and the procedure was to drive onto the weight bridge get your ticket then pull into the loading area, once there pull your curtains and then sit in the cab whilst being loaded. I had done all this and was enjoying a cuppa in the cab whilst being loaded and a suit came over banged on the door and asked where my hardhat was :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Me “In here somewhere, why?”

Him “You need to put it on”

Me “Why i’m in the cab and there is a roof above my head”

Him “Them bags weigh a ton and half”

Me “So exactly how is a hard hat going to protect me?”

Him “It’s health and safety, you have to wear one”

Me “Yeah whatever”

Result banned from site hehe hehe

You couldn’t make it up, since being back on Euro work have all the rubbish stuffed in one of the side lockers never used and i want to keep it that way :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I deliver to a lot of tyre houses… allways used to go in the reception (where the public wait while getting tyres changed) and get a coffee out of the machine…of late I have noticed the machines are getting fewer and fewer,
so I asked one guy where is your coffee machine and you.'ve guessed it,

“had to take them out mate, “health and safety” told us people might burn themselves.” :unamused: :unamused:

they all seem to think that wearing a hard hat or hi viz vest is going to save you if you get hit by a forklift when i was at freightliner and some containers blew off the stack in the wind i went in the office and asked if they had looked under the fallen boxes to see if anyone was underneath cos if they had their hi viz on they would want a hand out.

didnt go down to well.

Hate the wretched things.

Got reported a few weeks back by security at work for walking on the pavement from the gatehouse to the transport office without wearing one. I hadn’t actually stepped into the yard as such. My boss just laughed down the phone at the guard.

I later asked the guard in question when it had been made permissible for LGVs to drive along the pavements and walkways in the depot, and he just kept saying ‘it’s a health and safety requirement that they are worn on site’.

I pointed out that warehousemen using the same route don’t need one, but he could not understand my argument.

I also find it hilarious when certain managers put a brand new one on to come downstairs, despite the fact that the closest they get to the yard is going into the canteen for breakfast! They think they look cool in one.

Muppets. :unamused:

hmm… i sometimes to forget to whip mine off for the longer runs , on the shorter runs its a pointless exercise as every depo i got to a hi vi is a requirement and i would spend all night taking it off etc …
the one thing that does make me laugh is the "hard hat " … because i,m moving beer kegs i,am supposed to wear a hard hat whilst opening and closing the curtains . now if a beer keg was to fall out on me i,m pretty sure the hard hat isnt going to stop it from squashing me to a pulp … some sites request you wear it all times … pffffttt the hard hat is in my bag and thats were it stays …

The hard hat thing always makes me chuckle in container yards…if someone’s going to drop a 40ft box on you, a hard hat won’t help! Ok…I know it’s because of shiplocks and debris etc. on top of the boxes, but even so… :unamused:

Thats not a bad thing in some places in my opinion. Dont think they get a “proper” clean out etc in near on a year and can be a big cause of ilness through dirty lines etc. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

in south bank containers Dublin when they are moving the boxes over head you are not allowed to drive underneath but when your parked in the line you need you have to get out and walk round looking for your box.

yet another uk phenomenon.
it seems to be fast becoming law that you have to carry one in your vehicle when driving on the motorways of europe but they don’t seem to be too bothered about this health and safety issue.
i have yet to be asked to put on a hi viz anywhere abroad although i now realise this could be where i am going wrong at one place i go to, it could actually be the reason that i turn invisible when i turn up at the window, i will try to remember to put on my hi viz next time i go there, they may actually spot me within 20 minutes.

Talking about health and safety, at Toray, a very safety conscious firm, it was serious misconduct not to wear gloves, steel boots/shoes and I was banned in the hottest weather from wearing shorts on site (might scratch your legs on the racking in the warehouse). But the girls from the offices were allowed to clip clop all over the place in short summer dresses and high heels. Very nice for us but hardly consistant. BTW, much to the amusement of the gate guard and anyone else in the vicinity I used to stop and change my strides ( and clogs) just outside the main gate!

Salut, David.

Trevor Parry:
Another daft thing is when youre not allowed in the warehouse area because its not safe :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: If it`s not safe for us to walk about, how do the warehouse staff cope working a full shift in there?
Regards
Trev

At ours the racking is orange,FLTs and everything else deemed to be a hazard are painted yellow, our hi-viz`s make quite good camouflage jackets :unamused:

the best H&S move i`ve seen there was the armco barrier replaced by paint on the floor and this being zebra crossing style stops FLTs running you drivers over as you enter/leave the goods in office :open_mouth:

Dave

How affective is a hi vis vest. First thing this morning was to drop empty 40 foot into storage yard. Pulls up along side forks gets out the cab wearing a hi vis vest while he takes it off the skelly I open the back he looks in hands me the docket and tells me “if your in here again make sure your wearing your hi vis ”. I’m two feet in front of him and he can’t see it what chance has he got in the forks carrying a 40 foot box.  :exclamation:

I wear a hi viz where it is sensible to do so, that is not in the cab where I am not at risk.
I once got told to wear a vest between the cab & the tail because it was “Site rules.” I was parked on the road !!!. I pointed out I was parked in the road & not on the site & that I did not need, under H & S rules, to wear them in the back, “errrrrrrrrrr well it’s site rules,” but this isn’t site so I’m not under your rules & I’m not wearing one in the road so do want it or are you paying for me to take it back ?.
I also ALWAYS wear a safety hat if I’m working any where near a digger, it has nothing to do with H & S , it just seems like a sensible thing to do to make my head more visible.
The problem seems to be that the sad & the obsessive now have a new phrase in their repertoire, no longer is it only “more than my job is worth” it’s also “it’s site H & S rules.”
these people would be in secure accomodation with lots of nice Nurses to look after them if they were not H & S.

We have that American import ‘The Compensation Culture’ to thank for the OTT attitude of some to the appplication of Health and Safety Rules. Everyone is so scared of being taken to the cleaners in a litigation that they believe they must be prescriptive in what is dealt with quite adequately by most peoples common sense approach.

I do agree that the rules are needed to force the issue with those who believe its all BS, not for their benefit, but for mine.

 We all have the duty to look after our own and anyone else’s (that might be affected) safety at work. A lot of these places we go have gone OTT and only look at things from their point of view, rarely from both sides. For example, them insisting they can’t unload your truck without you giving them your keys to the truck. THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN . When you are in charge of a vehicle, you have a duty to keep hold of the keys in and out of the vehicle. It does not make it any safer to unload either, in fact quite the opposite. (IMHO).       :unamused:
