Crossed Hammers = Other work
Square/Round = Driving.
If you are single crewed (that is to say you are the only driver) set only one (usually marked with a 1) However, I would always put a spare tacho in the back to protect the needle, but DONT write on the spare tacho.
Hope that helps
Very few have the round driving symbol so driving is automatically selected
I used to leave it on the bed symbol when driving so any brief stops did not get recorded as other work
The square one with the line through it is POA

And as Rog knows youâll Get Fkd for that so its X hammers unless your on break rest or POA and if there happens to be a circle thatâs the one for driving but most newer annologs just have the 3 symbols

What law is broken when doing that ? = none

Vosa never said anything about my tachos that were left on rest whilst driving.
Actually 99% of the stuff you hear about Vosa is a load of crap.
The tachograph will have two sets of symbols, one for the driver and one for a second driver, on a single manned vehicle you only use the side marked 1.
Other Work
Break/Rest
POA
Driving is automatically selected when the vehicle starts moving then when the vehicle stops moving the tachograph will automatically revert to the activity that was selected before the vehicle moved.
So itâs very unlikely that youâll use an analogue tachograph these days where you can select driving but if you do:
Driving
thanks for the info guys , so its x hammers all the time unless its a break then the bed symbol ?

The law thatâs being broken is that youâre recording break when youâre working.
Iâm not surprised that anyone would leave the tachograph on break/rest while driving so that short stops are recorded as break, but to be honest I am surprised that anyone would suggest itâs legal to record break whilst working

I agree that thereâs a lot of crap talked about VOSA, but itâs equally true that plenty of people have been done for recording break when they were working.

No
If actually doing other work then its cross hammers
If not actually driving or doing other work then its either POA (box) or break (bed) - break is best option as it requires less rules to be obeyed
Using bed when driving records break when the vehicle is not in motion and who is to say what the driver is doing at that time - perhaps recouperating by simply doing nothing âŚ
Unless the laws on that have changed in the last 5+ years then all was fine with VOSA doing that

Thatâs spot on
If you want to brush up on the regulations VOSA have published a guide which most people seem to find handy, you can download it here
Thereâs also a section that deals with tachographs, analogue and digital.

The fact is that itâs illegal to record break whilst youâre working, and sat at traffic lights or in a queue of traffic or whatever is certainly not break

No the law hasnât changed, itâs always been illegal to record break whilst working.
If you think VOSA are fine with it feel free to put it to the test, jump in a vehicle with an analogue tachograph and with the tachograph on break drive around a bit then go to the nearest VOSA checkpoint and tell them what youâve been doing.
Let us know what they say
Just because plenty of people leave the tachograph on break doesnât mean itâs legal to do so
VOSA have to prove a driver was working if they suspect using break was wrong
If stopped at lights for a minute and relaxing with the handbrake on is the driver working?
ROG:

Yes, break is time that can be used exclusivity for recuperation, how can time at traffic lights be not working
Thereâs an old saying ROG, âwhen you find yourself in a hole, stop diggingâ
I ink I read somewhere when resting you have to be out of the drivers seat ?
