HGV Trade Plate Delivery Driver/Inspector

Has anybody done this kind of work? I saw it advertised on my local gov jobs website. Do you have to pay for the journeys from one location to another?

‘Make independent travel arrangements between vehicle collections’

I havent done this type of work myself, but know of some who did. Note the "Inspector" part of job title. If you collect a vehicle, inspect it, and say its good, what happens when you deliver it, and the receiver notices faults you hadn`t noticed?
Once upon a time Trade Platers would get fares paid (without receipts) and hitch around; very good earner! Not so today.
The devil is in the detail in work like this!

Did about 7 years in this game.Wish i’d kept a diary it’s not for the faint of heart, you will encounter very, very varied situations in terms of vehicles driven(cop cars, double deck buses, fire appliances, bin wagons, porsches, military stuff…)
You may stand for hours in biting gales, coz of map reading mishaps you will make and no-ones stopping to allow a red-eyed rainsoaked hitcher into their warm saloons.5 hours i once spent on the A34 trying to get north during the great gale we had yonks ago.Ended up in a pub car parks plastic kiddies playing tree while the storm played out.
Might be different now but think A line would be worth a call not sure of others.I had a good tenure for a firm in Fenny Compton for a few months moving some impressive metal for reviews by local car journalists, that was good while it lasted but most. purely car moving, has increasingly been monopolised by the steradent set, topping up their pensions and avoiding daytime tv.

I hitched mostly circa early 90’s and self-employed.as was,got very creative on the travel expenses front.

Yup, we got paid 20p per mile driving, 10p per mile hitching.
You have to make your own arrangements when not driving and however good you think you are at getting around the country, this jobs will test your creative skills.

I enjoyed the couple of years doing it, but with todays h&s over sensitive can’t think for themselves drivers, I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.
