But the whole basis of advanced driving, from civvy stuff to Police Class 1 (sorry… Police Advanced… not to drag this topic off into another debate) is self preservation. It doesn’t matter what someone should do, it’s what they do do, that you need to anticipate and plan around.
As often quoted, it’s no good having “John Doe, died 14-4-07, but he was in the right” on your gravestone.
Exactly. According to “Roadcraft” the police driver was very much in the wrong. Rightly or wrongly the lorry driver was signaling right, and although this only proves that his right indicator works it would certainly suggest that he might be intending to move to the right. No matter how important the shout, the police are trained not to take risks like that.
I think we can all put out own “opinions” on who was at fault on that or not!
And opinions are like ■■■■■■■■■ we all have one!
I think the only the people in the video have the right to make daming comments, I still believe the officer was right! i am not a pursuit trainer, but i have driven to many immediate jobs, and as i said it is my Personal opinion that i would not have done anything differently!
But hey i think some people are taking this all a bit to seriously, we should all use it at a training video of what to and not to do!
Observations and scanning all the time, and at no time go into the 3rd lane unless directed to do so!

Dunno about that, it would depend on where the 3rd lane was, I was out in lane 3 on two or three occasions today and no, the road didn’t have more than 3 lanes…

Agree 100%.
The police driver placed himself in the position of danger, end of story.
Given that he was approaching the roundabout and would have to slow down considerably anyway, to have slowed earlier allowing for the possibility that the truck driver might move across (whether legally there or not) would have caused him little loss of time.
Can’t comment on the dialogue as no sound at the moment
The third lane should only be used when instructed to do so, or when approaching a roundabout - surely we all agree on that ?
When you look at the video i still don’t understand why he was entering that lane! He wasn’t overtaking and the roundabout was still out of sight, so what was his reason?
I know we should all stick together when the profession is under criticism but drivers like that put us all at risk.
Don’t know why the truck driver was moving into lane 3, short of something we don’t know about, he shouldn’t have.
Nevertheless, he was doing so, and he was indicating so.
So the police driver should not have even attempted such a foolish manoeuvre.
When the truck driver’s mirrors were in sight of the camera, the police car was less than 100 metres away doing 121mph. Allowing for a slight adjustment for the camera being on the left hand side of the police car, there was no chance the truck driver could have seen him in time to take evasive action, thus the jibe about ‘not checking mirrors’ was well out of order.
There is no justification for this kind of speed outside of dire emergency.
I am very pleased to hear the truck driver was not prosecuted, but would have been very pleased to hear that the police driver had been. It’s time these cowboys (especially S.Yorks, the force which demonstrated one of its drivers talking on a phone while pursueing a stolen car (again no emergency) through a residential estate at 80mph ) were properly trained.
If the coppers head in the video was much bigger he would not be able to get in the car.
Just watched a police driver take both hands of the steering wheel to gesture to a friend in the programme shown the other day, you try that.
Got stopped and breathalysed on my way home from Barton-on Humber the other night at 03.30 in the morning, the police had followed me for miles but i had clocked them as soon as they pulled in behind me, I had gone over a white line was the excuse.
The following night I followed a police var on the same road who at time was well over the speed limit went round bends on the wrong side of the road and over white lines, that’s ok then after all he is a copper.
Ok can i have a pre warning if this is going to be a police bashing post so i can avoid it please!
May i add and i know this is going off the topic that road policing is very important, it might seem petty to some but it helps keep drink drivers off the road, saving lives, dealing with people not in proper control of there vehicles, and making sure that vehicle on the road are safe and fit for the purpose.
It is a very difficult role to which i respect greatly, i have been stopped and received points for speeding, which i deserved, i do not have any problem with being stopped, at least i know that they are making the roads safer for the rest of us, and hopefully it could be one of our lives they save with the work they do
a few years ago a friend of mine had a motorway accident, he ran into the back of a truck.
the truck operators insurance company paid for the repairs to my mates car because the truck had moved over into lane 3 of a 3 lane motorway, there was an accident further up but the driver was late spotting the traffic coming to a stop and simply moved across to lane 3 without looking to see what else was already in lane 3.
the driver was also prosecuted by the police for the offence and in my opinion quite rightly so - we are professionals, we have undergone training and we still undergo training (well some of us), as professionals we should be aware of everything that is happening around us, at the sides, in front and behind us at all times, thats what makes us a better driver than the other licence holders out there.
like it or not we should lead by example when we take up our role as professionals in roadcraft, driving is an art and we are the master artists or at least we should be, when everyone else gets out of shape we should be the ones to keep it in order and show them how it’s done properly.

FB that is not what this is. It is legitimate critisism of the kind of numpty who gives all officers a bad reputation by virtue of his conduct and subsiquent attitude,Personnaly I have a great deal of respect for the Police and the job they have to do under increasingly difficult circumstances. Underfunding, overlegislation and no back up from the government or the law makes the job demoralising I am sure but at least most of the public (at least the people I know) have respect for the Police. This kind of behaviour and incident causes loss of confidence and I am sure the Police can do without that on top of everything else.
This is exactly the kind of thing that has happened to the haulage industry due to the conduct of a few “professionals” we now are held in contempt generally by the public.

Spot on Johnny and also applicable to the Police I am sure you would agree FB

Our traffic policemen are the best trained in the world. It’s a thankless task, knocking on the door of people’s houses, to tell them their loved ones have been involved in an accident. Along with the rest of the services, dealing with incidents where more of the victim will be left on the road than will be taken away. Pulling the numpties, applying discretion, and the attitude test.
I have the greatest respect for our police service, but there’s pillocks in every job. Sadly, PC Langley seems to be so full of bull and arrogance, he’s likely to give his colleagues a bad name.

Ok FB, I’m not really police bashing one of the first things I was taught when learning to drive ( all those years ago) was to assume every other driver is an idiot and liable to to anything at any time
Ok, so the lorry shouldn’t have moved into the third lane, but the PC shouldn’t have assumed that he wasn’t going to, just because he shouldn’t ! ( he was indicating right !!)
having a stripe down the side of your car doesn’t mean you’re invincible and don’t need to use common sense!!
As for the load of bull the PC came up with when he stopped the truck - that sort of behaviour would have resulted in a complaint to his chief commissioner if it had been directed at me
was his comments at the start of the Video about not being into just pulling over wagons and preffering to go after real scrouts put in afterwards!!
As for the LGV driver, it looks a simple case of bully boy tactics, drifting the lane to halt the car speeding up the outside, very dangerous and in this case very unwise (mind you 120mph in fog the blues and sirens should have been on)
Personally I think that traffic cops are the best and always give them a friendly wave of support, unfortunately having had three fingers cut off my right hand the wave isn’t always appreciated!!
