HGV Residential Training

Has anyone done the residential course with Peter Smythe Transport? How does it work?Im thinking about maybe travelling from Kent but just want to no the ins and outs?

Many Thanks

I’m sure the great man will be along soon to answer every question you may have.

I have said on previous posts that apart from us Mansfield is where I would send my son to train. It’s worth the drive up.

Thanks John.

OP. Could I suggest you change the title to make it more specific? Then you’ll get responses from former trainees.

I did my training for c+e with them , nearly 2 years ago now . Couldnt fault the training or the accommodation for that matter ,( the advertised wi fi didn’t work up in my room , tho minor detail tho really ! )
It wasn’t a problem doing the training and test in a different unfamiliar area either , I think if you did it in an area well known to you you might get a little complacent
I used one of the "Christmas discount vouchers " , so had top quality training with a very generous discount as well .

This year I did their residential course which was great! I have never spent so much time lay on a bed in a hotel room getting lost in youtube and watching movies. May sound boring but the time flew so quickly. I could have traveled about visiting shotgun city and the like but I just wanted to chill and let the training sink in. There is a pub down the road that sells great food and you also have a tesco, subway and frankie and ben’s on the same grounds. If you do stay at the hotel, which is fine by the way, don’t stay in the room above the reception as you can hear the delivery every morning at 430am. I got used to it quickly enough, just don’t expect a lie in lol. Rcommended.

Mikey D is describing the village pub we have used for some years.

instantKarma was in the Mansfield Travelodge.

Some folks prefer the clinical image of Travelodge. Some prefer a friendly pub.

There are many more folks on the forum who have used this service - but maybe they’re not visiting the forum as regularly as they used to.

I can fully recommend the Residential Course. I did the Cat C course in Feb 2013 and stayed at the B&B in Nether Langwith - The Jug & Glass.

All paid for by Peter Smythe, very convenient! I remember having a choice - either a breakfast every day or an evening meal. I went for the breakfast which was very good and served at any time that suited me.

It’s in a very peaceful location too, a pleasant drive to/from Mansfield Woodhouse. The locals seemed like a good bunch.

The bed was comfy but the room did get very cold at night (in fairness, it did snow this week. Proper ice road trucking!) Also the TV reception was poor and you mustn’t be afraid of dogs because there’s a big, friendly one in the living quarters.

When I go back for my C+E, I expect I’ll opt for the Travelodge if it’s available- just to try something different.

I spoke with the owners of Jug and Glass a couple of weeks ago. The whole place has been redecorated and has finally been lifted out of the 1980’s!

Yes, there is a dog and it’s a big old building so can be a bit cool on a really cold night. But the hospitality is great, the grub is brilliant and the location is superb.

Without a doubt, Travelodge will be warmer and dog free. But IMO hospitality is next to zero and no food included.

When I work away I use Travelodge as a matter of course. I know what I’m gonna get. Not brilliant but very acceptable.

The most important factor is that folks receive top quality training and enjoy our free hospitality.

Helo mate,

I used Peter Smythe at Peterborough back in July this year for my C+E and the instruction standard was excellent. Accommodation not so good (Hero of Aliwal) but let’s face it…it was free and did the job!!

Can’t recommend Peter Smythe highly enough, did my 35 hours DCPC with them too at Mansfield (all in with the C+E price) and that was great too. (Great possibly an overstatement as it was DCPC) but the instructor was a knowledgable bloke and made it as painless and worthwhile as he possibly could.

The company are straight down the line and you know what you’re getting for your money…no surprises.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

It’s like reading the “trip advisor” site. Lol!
