Just had my renewal notice for HGV and PSV licence. Runs out in January, and the automatic extension without medical seems to no longer apply. Now retired, so am minded not to renew. Am I right in thinking that you don’t lose the entitlement completely, so if I change my mind in a couple of years time, I can just have a medical and it will be renewed? CPC is valid for another 4 years so that’s not an issue.

You are correct. Only medical or TC can remove your entitlement. Not 100% sure TC can either.
Reason you did not get 1 year option is because you are over 65 so only 1 year D4 applies
The 1 year concession is for those who have more than 1 year if they get a D4 medical
