Isn’t it common for employers to pay for this…at least up to a certain cost?

Not much good to you I know, but ? £82.50 is the best I can find around here. Don’t know how true it is but a guy I know recons you can get one for £25 IN Swindon.
£65 is the lowest I’ve heard of that’s near Swansea. Anyway, even £25 is quite a lot when you consider how much work it is for the doctor to complete the medical.
You could try Doctors On Wheels, I used them for my PCV med and it only cost me £47.
