Hi all. The DVLA recently revoked both my HGV and car licenses for drug misuse. Long story short, I had tooth ache and bought nurofen painkillers. They caused an ulcer in my stomach and I had to have a serious operation. I didn’t inform the DVLA. Any old school legendary truck drivers out there got any experience with this subject? Any information or advice about what other drivers have done in similar situations would be much appreciated. After twenty years driving round the world and with a clean license, I’m now looking at walking or biking everywhere. Can I apply for a car license in another EU country? For instance, I have Irish grandparents and could get an Irish passport. Does anyone have knowledge or experience with applying for licenses in other EU countries… this country is twisting melons man.

I believe that all EU countries now exchange information about driving offences, I don’t know but I’m guessing that the same could apply to medical problems.
Good luck, I hope you manage to sort it out OK
By the way, I’ve asked the MODs to move this thread to the PDF where it’s likely to get more replies.
Something not right here. Nurofen is an over the counter drug containing ibuprofen and codine If you get the plus version.
You’d have to take a shed load to get an ulcer…
Even so… how can you be banned for drug misuse when presumably the dvla only found out about the ulcer… did your doctor tell them you got the ulcer through drug misuse?
If so, I’d be kicking up a huge storm. Can the doctor prove you misused them? I very much doubt it.
Something doesn’t add up. Can you give any more details?
Let’s say a person gets charged with a drug use offence (illegal drug). They weren’t behind the wheel of a vehicle or anywhere near one. The drug offence is dealt with. They’ve still got their driving licence unless they were also convicted of a in charge under the influence type offence. So why have you lost also your car licence for taking a LEGAL drug no where near a motor vehicle? I didn’t think they revoke your licence not for a car anyway for that unless there was a conviction.
Any way you can appeal? Find out what your doc has actually told them? It doesn’t seem right based on what you’ve said.
Didn’t tell them he’d been misusing NSAIDs to the extent that they caused a stomach ulcer.

When does taking NSAIDs become misuse and who decides its misuse ? Waking into the Dr’s and saying you’ve taken Brufen an hour earlier than the recommended 4 hourly intervals ?
short term use won’t result in ulcers, unless taking with another medication, alcohol or if already suffering from ulcers
Don’t most / all application forms for licences have a question like:
“Have you been banned from holding a licence?”
If so the only way you’d get past that is by lying. Fraud is pretty serious everywhere.

I daresay it would come out when answering Section 4, Question 6 during a D4 medical.

The OP is a little sketchy, it’s like a dot to dot with half the dots missing. A D4 medical is only required periodically or to declare a significant change in your health.
The section that says “Are you currently taking Medication” I don’t think Brufen for toothache would be classed.
Looks to me as if the o/p is taking us for idiots…(a thing that is one of my many pet hates ) so not really interested in playing along.
Tell the truth, stop ■■■■ ing about and you may get the advice you require mate

That is Section 8 - Medication. I was specifically referring to Section 4 - Psychiatric Illness.

Section 4 question 6, Persistent drug misuse in the past 12 months.
Taking over the counter NSAIDs for toothache isn’t medication misuse.
The question being, on who’s say so was the need for a D4 required ?
A doctor or optician can notify DVLA if your health or eyesight fall below the minimum required, the police and courts can under certain circumstances.
I’m a complete smackhead and have been for as long as I can remember and they finally caught up with me and rightfully took my licence away. Is there any way I can easily get a foreign licence from somewhere that won’t be able to see my records and still drive with it back here?
