HGV driving instruction - any ideas?

An interesting thought !!

A friend of mine who is a driving instructor (car), cam to see me over the holidays & we got talking (as you do) about selling the Bova & my hunt for a suitable unit. This guy knows i have had a few years tarmac bashing & said “you gonna do instruction” … my reaction was to laugh & sorta “NO”.

I am 100% happy doing my present work & it earns a crust, but…
I remember the bloke that taught me, ran a pub (good combination !) & did a bit of driver training during the day whilst his wife ran the quiet times.

I don’t know what difficulties would be involved, & I have no intention of doing it full time, BUT … it would make use of an old unit, I’m 99% confident I could “learn the ropes”, it would help new guys (on price), & I could earn a few quid part time.

My questions:

Is it a silly idea to even consider it
Would it be a problem as now it’s Cat C first (need 2 trucks ?)
Operators licence / CPC (doubt it ?)
A fair rate per hour ?
Costs involved in setting up ?

Well, just a thought & although most of you are no doubt not instructors, there’s a very wide band of knowledge on here

Be interested to hear your thoughts / views.

Silly to consider - No. You don’t have to proceed if you don’t want to.
2 trucks - wouldn’t wag and drag do as well or are you thinking of using your soon to be purchased Magnum?
O license - Don’t know but someone will.
Fair rate - You’ll have to work that out once you know the costs. If you don’t it will become a drain on your rescources not a support.
Costs involved - To many unknowns to say for sure, don’t know what you have already, but they will need to be kept in check and some contingency allowed for the inevetable unseen bill.

Don’t know for sure the requirements for training vehicles to have an O Licence but a list of exemptions can be found on the TAN Website and I don’t see traing vehicles included in the list of exemptions.

You could email them and ask, I’ve always found they respond quite quickly to requests for information.

Hi WT & CH

Thanks for the info. Will have a little look round & send them mail, not in any hurry to even think about it really, I would enjoy it as a part time “hobby” but not sure about full time.

Good idea about the lorry & drag, hadn’t thought of that

Really depends on what i buy, if it’s a magnum i think it would be too big for training  but maybe the eurotech with ZF would be ok. But then there’s the problem of a rigid (could always buy a cheapo 10t gross i suppose if i did decide to go for it, running expenses wouldn’t be too high i guess).

Many thanks both of you & enjoy your last couple of days off

Toytown,
You where originally looking to buy a value for money “well used” truck to convert to a “winnabego” type unit? Now it could be used for “learner duty” as well. Don’t know if I would want my £3000 “hobby” truck to be driven regularly by tyre kickers, gear crunchers and “HEY BOYS”!!!

Hey Btruck,

All ideas m8, that’s all

If (& it is a big IF) I decided to do it, surely using the unit would make sense ? Afterall the trailer would be our personal home from home, the unit is only a means of dragging it there.

We shall see what transpires

You’ll be ok on the tax front. I’m pretty sure my local training company has an O licence. So you will probably need one of those. You only need a rigid if you’re going to offer the whole lot. You can just do class 2 to class 1 training if you want.

Hi Allikat,

O licence … Well if your right, thats the idea sorted (don’t want the performance of that). Will see if i can find out. interesting fact, for some reason sweeper trucks don’t have O licence or use tacho’s yet they run on the roads for a lot of their working day :open_mouth: Maybe because they are considered to be plant.

Class 2 to 1: Yes but i wonder how many punters i would lose because they enrolled for the whole course in 1, OR doesn’t it work like that (in the old days i did my class 1 only)

thanks for the help

john

Got it in one John sweepers are classed as plant.

cheers
STEVE.

IF you do have both wagons, then your going to have to make them both pay, what with running costs etc. I know at the end of the day it’s a hobby but it’d be nice to break even or maybe make a few quid  . And I bet repairs - gears etc will be heavy (I know they were for my instructor) as it takes time to learn to drive them properly.
