windrush:
my missus was taught that you only need to indicate if there is another vehicle in the immediate area
I find this very strange tbh. Not only vehicles, but pedestrians, cyclists may find it helpful when you indicate, someone may appear suddenly in the immediate area, also it draws unnecessary brain power to assess the situation and decide whether you should indicate or not. Yes, i am supporter of indicating every time you change lane or turning at a junction
Totally agree with you there, it was how I was taught 46 years ago, but (as we ALL know) the missus is not always right but NEVER wrong!
Iāve often thought the approach of it you canāt be arsed to indicated on/ off a round about, I canāt be arsed to wait. Often bailled on the idea though, as post accident paperwork is too much hassle. Thoughts there though!!
Dave the Renegade:
Lack of indicating also applies to car and lorry drivers who go around a parked vehicle on the roadside, or a pedestrian walking. The standard of driving is appalling with a lot of drivers taking no pride in their driving.
Thatās how it has been taught for the past 10 years, maybe more. Position the car so other vehicles can see you are coming out past the car, then an indicator canāt be mistaken for you wanting to turn into a side street, driveway, etc. Thatās how I was taught anyway. Iāll indicate right if there is anything coming towards me, that I can fit out in front of, and Iām taking up the whole other lane.
If Iām sitting behind a parked car (line of traffic coming towards me) in the truck Iāll bang a right indicator on, more to stop any knobhead overtaking me than anything else.
LIBERTY_GUY:
I use my mirrors and indicate to help and advise other road users as to my intentions.
I indicated when joining the dual carriageway section of the A66 after Warcop to show the Paddy up my arse I was overtaking a cyclist who for what ever reason decided it was a good idea to go for a ride there. Fortunately said Irish gentleman worked out I was either doing it for a reason or to overtake a Nissan Micra, neither of which he wanted to get stuck behind so did the same.
The problem is traffic lights on roundabouts, because idiots think that traffic is controlled they donāt need to indicate trouble is this teaches them that they donāt need to indicate on any roundabout
