It is the end of a busy day. You are getting ready to go home. You press the button to eject your card and..............Nothing.
Whatever you do, the unit fails to deliver your card back to you. So what are you to do next?
The following procedure has been compiled on the basis of “Best Practice” but should be considered as valid only within the U.K.

Will the VU provide a printout?
Yes
Obtain 2 Printouts and endorse activities adding full name, together with a written explanation and add signature.

No
On the reverse of printout paper make a record of the days activities adding full name, driver licence number, or driver card number, together with a written explanation and add signature.
Pending the return of the card, a driver may continue to drive digital vehicles for up to 15 calendar days. You must keep printouts as records by doing the following; at the start of the shift take two copies of the VU 24 Hr printout. Write on each your name, driver licence number or driver card number and sign printouts.
At the end of the shift, take two more VU 24 Hr printouts and add the ID details described above. If your shift spans midnight you will need to take two VU 24 Hr printouts for the day your shift commenced.
Hand one copy of printout(s) to your employer and keep one copy for production if requested by Police / VOSA. |

When the fault has been rectified, obtain two VU 24 Hr printouts endorsing them with personal details together with the reason and add signature.
Use own Driver Card whilst returning vehicle from repairer.
Hand one copy of each record to the employer for them to store.
Keep one copy of each record with you for production at the roadside if requested by Police / Vosa.
Records must be produced for current day and previous 28. |

Ensure that a Defect Report is completed in respect of the vehicle concerned.
Ensure that the vehicle is taken to a repairer at the earliest opportunity, and
that Maintenance Records are updated accordingly.
Ensure that once the Driver Card has been retrieved, it is returned to the driver to whom it is issued, at the earliest practicable opportunity.
Retain one copy of each printout for the requisite period. (12 months from date to which the record relates.) |
