When the wheels are turning, lorry is earning!!
…unless you’re trundling around the heathrow stretch of the M25 at teatime!
Even the SAINTS sign is looking knackered as you go by it…

Hi, just wondering how you all get paid? My husbands boss has decided to pay him for just the hours he is driving. This will not include loading/unloading which is half of his job. Is this normal? Any advice greatly received. Thanks in advance truckers_wifeI think your husbands boss has the right idea, most places tip/load for you while the driver is either sleeping, feeding his fat face, or spinning BS stories to anyone who’ll listen. Fair play to him, and I hope a lot more bosses take a leaf out of his book and follow suit.
You obviously have one of the easier driving jobs then, I know I don’t go to sleep while someone unloads the wagon, so if my boss brought in that policy I would take my chances on the dole because it just wouldn’t be worth it! Out of a 13.5hr shift the other day I did around 6hrs of driving the rest was loading, unloading, pre start checks, re-fueling, cab hopping, waiting for stores to be bothered to open for delivery, bringing returns out of their warehouse because the store didn’t do it.

I was joking, mate. As it happens, I don’t believe the original post, it’s obviously a wind-up by one of the half-wits on here.
As much as I wish it was a wind up, it’s not. Thanks for the advice to those who gave it, very much appreciated. I’d also prefer it if you didn’t call me a half wit. I’m just a wife worrying how my husband and I can carry on paying our bills, mortgage and provide for our little girl if this does go ahead. Husband has already started looking for another job. Thanks again.
As has been said before… The company is on the skids, run away, run away!
Or, your husbands girlfriend is pregnant and he’s preparing you for less money coming in!
Just saying.
I would imagine that as the driver is (presumably) hourly paid then any time shown on the tacho between signing on and signing off should be paid? We were paid off the card, it became a time sheet effectively, it was only when I went on ‘earning’s’ that you sat around for hours without payment (loading and tipping etc) which possibly isn’t the norm these days.
Pete.

I promise not to call you a half-wit, not that I did in the first place, re-read my comment.

shoot!.. Not paid for loading and unloading! I can’t for the life of me imagine how your hubby’s boss thinks this is going to work out! To my way of thinking the only way this could possibly work is for the lorry to be double manned. One driver to load and unload and the other to drive it on the roads…but to what advantage? Hubby needs to do as advised and get a new job as soon as possible and hang his keys up in the traffic office smartish, his boss is a fool.
Good luck.
I suppose you could always not turn up at work until the vehicle is loaded, then go off duty off premesis at the far end until it’s backloaded, etc.
If you’re not going to be paid for office/loading parts of a job, don’t do that part of the job - simples!
"If I’m not earning unless wheels are turning, then I’ll not turn-in, so stop that gurning!

Done that, I still don’t believe it. Name the company, if it’s true.
I am a half-wit, but I don’t believe everything I read on this forum.
If I was only being paid to drive, then that’s all I would do. I wouldn’t put diesel in the tank, or open the trailer doors, or take my paperwork to the goods-in office because none of these things would be part of my remit.

+1
Thinking about it in those terms…Harry… his contract of employment must be one of the easiest ever written…let alone dispute. It would be bomb-proof.
