Help! Does your company pay a fuel bonus?

Lucy

You may already know this from your chat with Simon

Ian is currently getting £145 per month fuel bonus, even on our ‘incentive’ pay scheme.

No drop in wages and just a slight adjustment of driving habits.

Call me if you want to chat to him about it.

Pat

We get one give me a pm if you want , will give you names and numbers of the bosses (if they say its ok)
If It’s based on 26t ridged’s i think they need to get 11,12 & 13mpg if they reach the target they get £100,£150 & £200,
for the artic i think its 8,9 & 10 mpg (altho its a bit vauge as we only have one artic lol) it payes out
every 3 months hope this helps Mick (due to be payed this month)

Fuel bonuses are a minefield, unless every lorry is identical and they all do the same run, with the same load, with the same traffic and weather conditions there is no way to make them fair :open_mouth:

It’s another example of penny pinching by bean counters, get the drivers to save a thousands and thousands of pounds a year and we’ll throw them a couple of hundred quid for their efforts :unamused:

Companies spout off about how they’re doing everything they can to reduce their operating costs, yet they’re not, not by a long way. Yes a ‘bad’ driver can use up to 30% more fuel than a ‘good’ driver, but how many firms actually train the drivers properly, I mean proper training on how to get the best out of the equipment, not assessments from some brown noser :unamused:

Every manufacturer offers training on their vehicles with the number one priority being getting the best economy from them, how many drivers have had this training

Then there’s the lorries and trailers themselves, are they geared correctly? (direct drive being the most efficient) Do they have the lowest rolling resistance tyres? Are those tyres inflated correctly? Do they have the aerodynamics set up correctly? Are they running synthetic oils? Are they in an oil analysis programme so that they can check that the engines are working correctly? (soot levels, cross contamination of diesel/coolant/wear metals etc)

The most hypocritical of all are the ones that run lorries with supersingles on the front and all the light bars and other crap nailed on everywhere, then try to reduce their mpg :unamused: Rip all that crap off and you’ll save a full mpg :open_mouth:

Thanks folks, your input is greatly appreciated. For those that wondered, my interest is in looking at how bosses can get drivers to give a [zb] about fuel figures, and in this instance I’m hoping to talk to those who do pay a fuel bonus about whether it works. I’ll be sticking another thread up at the weekend (only home briefly) exploring a few other aspects, so if we can keep this one on topic I’d be grateful. :grimacing:

Pat, it was Simon’s fault I started down this particular winding road… Don’t tell him, but he’ll be getting a phonecall shortly. :stuck_out_tongue: :grimacing:

They (bosses) could do everything they can to their vehicles and train their drivers on how to get the best from them…lead by example :bulb:

Aren’t we supposed to be doing that anyway, as part of our job, so the bonus is just that.

A supermarket supply company I did a 2 year stint for used to “monitor” fuel usage (nothing new now, but this was 12 years ago). I think we may’ve got a small monthly bonus, I can’t remember as I’m trying to erase the 2 year stint from my memory! I was top of the list for fuel saving, but they had to pay me extra overtime coz I was always last back in the yard!! I only rushed about when it suited me. Counterproductive really for them, double earner for me!

Yeah, I agree, but that isn’t the point I’m making, there are many threads on here about some new fuel saving scheme at different firms, most come as knee jerk reactions from the bean counters, who, had they done their job properly in the first place, would have specified the most fuel efficient lorry for their particular job :bulb:

I happen to think that every driver should have some training through the manufacturer’s programmes, I did most of them when I was at TRUCK mag and it improved my overall driving, not just my mpg

to get us to give a ■■■■ about fuel they should involve every one in it not just the drivers,i can save them a few quid by driving fuel efficently, but then i ring in for a collection [im at peterborough] and the planner sends me to hull[god knows how far empty] :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ,i ring in from alferton-he sends me too hull empty to collect,i ring in from doncaster-he sends me to malton empty to collect,[he cancels the stockton truck whos comming down country and sends me up],it seem .us drivers are saving it with one hand, whilst some ■■■ in office chucks it away with the other :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

we dont get fuel bonus , …well if we do they havent told us about it

I couldn’t agree more newmercman, I was lucky because my old guv’nor was a IAM member for HGV, so always had a good teacher! I was also lucky enough to have a bit of fuel efficient training in Munich, courtesy of MAN, which I feel made me a better driver. At the end of the day saving fuel could save your job regarding making a profit or loss.

Regards,

Mark.
