Hella connection?

What is the difference in using a hella socket rather than regular socket?

You have to buy a converter, or attach a hella plug

Hope that helps :unamused:

yea, does it make any difference whether you connect through the hella socket though. Wondered why it was there.

No, it’s the same electricity, from the same source

I thought hella sockets where usually used on a 24v supply and standard socket was 12 volt so the max loading would be higher on a hella

I wasn’t aware if the hella socket was direct wired to the battery or not. I’ve read on forums of them being used for cool boxs and microwaves that’s all.

If you’re running a low power item like a satnav or phone charger, I doubt it makes much difference. For a higher power item like a kettle or fridge, I would think the Hella one is going to be better, simply because it has a much more secure physical connection, and so is less likely to run hot due to poor connection.

incorrect

plugging a microwave oven in to a Hella socket :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

do you not like the truck :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

a Hella socket has a higher rated fuse and cable to it than a normal cig lighter socket, and can run things that draw a higher ampage than things such as a phone charger or sat nav, cool boxes for example run higher amps and are better suited to the Hella socket

but, FFS, do not plug a microwave in to it :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

  • 1 scania son that is quite correct

and +1 shuttlespanker

Then where do I plug a microwave in? Thought you could get them for trucks.

Inverter wired direct from to the battery with appropriate cable.

it depends on a few things

what truck is it?

what microwave is it?

if it is a 24 volt microwave, the Samsung Roadmate pulls 31 amps, a normal cig lighter is rated at 10 amps, and the cable is probably about 13 amps

in the DAF XF95, there is a specific plug in the centre locker for the microwave, most other trucks, the microwave has to be wired in by a competent auto electrician

if it is a normal household microwave, you will need a very large wattage inverter that will need to be hard wired direct to the main live and earth inputs in the fuse board area

It’s a scania. Don’t think I will bother then. Just the company I work for doesny allow gas cookers.

If the trucks got it then the best spot for a Microwave is into an Anderson connector isn’t it?

ok then
so if you have for example an FM transmitter that only works on 12v and not on 24v
can you plug it into the hella socket and will it work

NO!!!

a Hella socket can be either 12 or 24 volt, in just the same way a cig lighter socket can be either 12 or 24 volt

do not take it for granted that because they are different type sockets, they are different voltage

the previous post (quoted below) ‘should’ clarify the issue for you, obviously, you missed it the first time around

as i mentioned in another post on this thread, the only way to be perfectly sure of the voltage is to get a volt meter and check it yourself, do not rely on the markings on the socket, the voltage may have been changed by a previous user

For wiring a 24 volt microwave into a scania, the cables are inside the top console under the centre locker. You can access them by pulling out 1 of the cubby hole thingy’s on the left of the tacho.
