Hi Peeps,
Been on here quite a lot reading all the posts and they are very interesting.
However, I am a young chap 19 years old and have my full Category CE licence with CPC and I am determined to get into the business of trucking across the UK. I am so keen however a lot (not saying all) want experience. Fair enough. But how does someone like me get experience from scratch?? I have heard of Driving Agencies but there are very few at where I live in Wales. I am determined to find a Job within the UK and would go anywhere if anyone would be interested in me.
I know it’s a big ask but when you have spent so much on it and nothing happens it’s a pain in the arse! And it is my dream job.
Any advice would be very much appreciated!
Thank You,
Andy

10 out of 10 mate, that’s the right answer …it shows you are willing and keen.
Go into your local transport firms (NOT ringing them) armed with your licence, dcpc (and your enthusiasm) and look tidy and presentable.
Tell them your situation, and tell them you are looking for someone just to give you a chance and a trial.
Be polite and show them you are intelligent.
You might try as many as there are in your area, but it only takes one to see your potential and maybe give you a chance.
If you get as far as a test drive make sure you do all the checks bs, to impress them before you set off.
Keep your head and give a good safe drive checking mirrors etc as you have been shown on your course.
Good luck.
Sorry I can’t give you a list of co.s, but I aint from your area, the best I can do is give you good advice.
I have taken on young lads in the past who have done just as I have told you, only because it showed initiative which impressed me. .

Ask dozy, he won’t have a job after 4am Friday.
Seriously, mom can’t offer any companies but, don’t give up keep knocking a door will open up. If you are happy to travel maybe maritime or stobart type company.■■
Get a decent c.v. then call every haulage company in your area. If they say no which 99 percent will ask if you can email your c.v. to them. Other way is print your c.v. off and knock on haulage doors. If ever I’ve been out of work that’s what I’ve done and I’ve always got lucky by the end of the week. You just need to build up experience so don’t turn down any job even if it’s cat c.
Good luck to the op, looking for work, and to work, aint work shy, willing to do anything legal ( my last word not his, but he will agree )…that the problem with this industry, lots of training about ( at a price ) lots of ■■■■■■■■ training too ( cpc )…YET we supposedly have a shortage of drivers and companies state must have x years experience , how the F are they supposed tom do that with nothing in place. I applaud agencies who take on newly trained, or those with limited experience, and i also applaud companies who do that too. Insurance companies have their requirements, which is another obstacle, such as age etc. The age has been reduced to meet the shortage ( i believe ) and thats about all thats been done..the same with the pension age has increased, but no provision for experienced hands like myself, who retired, but wants some part time work, with many closing doors because of the age thing, i know a mate of mine, who is the same age, applied for a few jobs, only to be told Your too old ` no matter his experience, so maybe the insurance companies are also discriminating. I think if a driver has all his paperwork up to date, then why cant he continue giving something this industry lacks…experience…never mind the age.

Exactly what my 21 year old son did 6 months ago when he passed his test. Just happened to time it right with a company doing pallet network work so they put him on a rigid doing local multidrop for 4 months then after he’d proven he’d not wreck the motor nor have the load falling over all the time and didn’t bring half of it back they offered him artic work tramping, having him spend the first week with the shunter running trailers up and down from the yard to a local factory to get the hang of reversing. He’s been doing tramping for almost two months and gets sent all over the UK.
You could try A W Jenkinsons, they have motors running out of craven arms and new bridge on wye. Monies not the worst and you will soon get the hang of driving artics, a lot of people slate them but I found the job to be decent enough if you’ve got a backbone. Look on their website and there’s a contact number for each office.
