heavy haulage

im just being curious but what weights would you go up to if your carrying volvo bm,s excavators, etc basically nothing that requires a police ■■■■■■
cheers

not 100% sure of the jist of your question carl, but the biggest 360 which volvo make is around 45te putting you approx 75te gross, and their biggest wheeled loader is around 53te probably grossing out just under 90te?

caterpillar and others make much bigger items though - some of which require stripping down (cab, bucket, wheels/tracks off etc) before you could move them by road

When I delivered steel for BSD (now Corus) out of Bellshill, working for Exel. We used to deliver two 25t loads a day to Komatsu in Birtley. They made 75t 360degree tracked diggers, among others.

The diggers had to be stripped down quite a lot for road movement. Even the boom had to go on 2 separate trailers.

I took the son of a friend with me on one early morning trip. We watched them putting the tracks onto a small, 36tonner, then watched them take a 75tonner out-side to check everything worked before the strip down for transport.
While I was sheeting and securing my load in the shed at Bellshill, he was kept entertained by watching the overhead cranes moving plate around. One of the crane ops saw him watching and decided to make him jump. He switched on the big electro magnet and slowly lowered it down towards a 180mm slab (probably weighing 10 - 15 tonnes. The slab jumped about 2 feet, off the floor onto the magnet. I turned round, wondering about the noise and the young lads mouth had dropped open. I’ve never seen eyes that big either.   :sunglasses:

Carl.

Police escorts are very rare these days, at £200/hr per Police vehicle, it makes sense to self ■■■■■■ (with appropriately marked vans).

Escorts are not neccesarily needed on all heavy loads, a lot is down to the dimensions and also the policies of different Police Forces. All forces have to be notified that you pass through.

For example, we pick up Bell 50 dumpers from Burton under Neewood and bring down to Cornwall, tractor and trailer empty weigh 40t + dumper at 35t = 75t. No ■■■■■■ is required until we reach the single carriageway and lanes of Cornwall.

However, last week, I had one steel beam on a standard tractor and flat, total weight, under 20t, but trailer stretched to 75’ and that required escorting from start to finish.

Hope this helps?

John

thanks for the replys guys the reason for asking was that i saw a programe on discovery about engines and this featured volvo,s fh 610 and it was dragging a 4 axle low loader the unit was a double drive but apart from that it didnt look any differant to a standard outfit anyway the presenter said the gvw was 150 tonne and all it had on the back was a volvo bm all be it a big un thats the reason for the question
cheers

fred, loads upto 3.00m wide (used to be 2.90m) do not need to be notified to the police or anyone, ditto upto 18.35m RIGID length (trailer and any projection)

jj sorry to be ignorant but wtf is te?.

P.S. the local taxi firm can take my missus home and dont have any problems with overweight vehicles on a Saturday night.

53tonnes as opposed to 53t (tons) - just a general abbreviation, not specific to heavy haulage i didn’t think

Tonne and Ton is there a difference?, i didnt know if there was.

1 ton = 1016kgs or 1.016 tonnes

jj72:
1 ton = 1016kgs or 1.016 tonnes

Is this before metric or what sorry i appear to be very ignorant here maybe i am too young but i always though 1000kgs was a ton whats this thing with the e on the end?.

I may appear to be taking thepiss but i am not i just dont know what the difference is in a tonne and a ton is it 0.016kg?.

TONNE is the correct spelling of the metric version however TON is sometimes used to mean 1000kgs even though it is technically incorrect.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne#Origin

So no mention of te then?;)…

In France and the English-speaking countries that are predominately metric

We are an English speaking country that are NOT predominanlty metric it is only a recent thing that we were metric we have always been an Imperial measure country.

And the sooner we get rid of that Predominantely perpetrator of terminilogical inexactitudanol leader we have had for too long the soonerwe can be British and return to British measurements and ways of life.

However, in Britain, the common people

OK Ok i am common and i like ton,s…:):):);););)

You mean you prefer Imporial measurements■■? Not for me thanks, I will stick to Metric, much easier to work out. As for the majority of the English speaking worlds being Metric, I would beg to differ, look 3000 miles west and you will find a country with 300 million English speakers who I would doubt could even spell Metric, let alone know to use it

Here’s the difference as I see it. (If I’m wrong, then I’m sure someone will let me know)

1 TON = 2240 pounds (avoirdupois)

1 TONNE = 1,000 kilos
