"Heavy Haulage through the years"

A strange beast. What do you make of this rig Patrick. The trailer seemed to articulate behind the front 3 axles

The driver was having a couple of lunchtime beers. Pretty sensible really as he was at the top of a hill a good 8 miles down and awful steep. In Colombia runaway lanes are for poofters.

Konig was a Rotterdam freight-forwarder and quite a few Dutch operators ran their lorries in Konig livery in the '70s. Robert

Do you know what happened to Konig Robert? Did they came under the Nedlloyd banner in the end?

Cheers DIG! Is that a Western Star?

Quite right Patrick the Western Star is quite a popular truck and competitor to KW and Mack here in West Aus,tri drive is also quite common these days especially in the mining sector with side tippers.I will see if I can source some pics of them pulling quads.

Cheers Dig

Bit of the “great unknown” I must admit… Didn’t they sort of specialised in tractor units used for heavy haulage from the start? No doubt Dean will provide us with an article about Western Star shortly…

The white truck on the before last picture has a strange axle display…

Looks a bit dodgy with those single wheels fitted on the driving axles doesn’t it…

Doornbos’ Kromhout looks a fine truck. What a pity such manufacturers disappeared!

Verheul is another name that has vanished Paul…

Bewick:
The earlier post of pv83 calling the TDG , The Transport Demolition Group may have been a suitable description after the “Old Guard” retired but until that happened the TDG were a well run, if disparate, collection of Companies. I have met Sir James Duncan on a number of occasions both when he was the Supremo at TDG and latterly when he was Chairman of Boalloy and he was, without doubt, one of the sharpest men I have met. After his day at TDG "The suits " took over and the Group slid down hill from then on ! I’m sure Tom Riding could elaborate from the stand point of being in possession of “inside info” But to put things is perspective, TDG was a free enterprise profit based and motivated Company( R.O.C.) as compared to BRS who couldn’t care less as the good 'ole British Tax Payer would cover their deficits ! Cheers Bewick.

Cheers for clearing that up Bewick

Not much of a fan of BRS though are we…?

Cheers David!
The first 3 axles steer as does the other 4 at the back-end, it’s a bit like Lego though, you can attach several axles onto the gooseneck, fit every sort of loading bed inbetween and add a further couple of axles at the back, the combo pictured is what we refer to as a 3 bed 4.

Driver was probably searching for some Dutch courage

Dig, Nice pics chap !

As i understand it Western Star were fairly popular in Australia. The best seller was always Kenworth
followed by Volvo which i assume is still the case ■■

Ah ha. So that is the secret then Heer Patrick. I don’t drive anything bigger than a bicycle these days, so I have no hope of making it. :open_mouth: I have crossed over the border into France on my bike though. Does that qualify me for the continental driver t-shirt?

You just have to pick your place and although not the best of pics I have taken this overtaking move of 2 triples in 1988 was about 50kms north of the Cadjebut mine which Deanb,s Gulf Western Stars were operating out of.Well done Deano
No T shirts just a good day and thanks mate on the cb.

Thanks DIG. I did watch a youtube video which showed a couple of overtakings. Most of the time it was agreed via CB radio before starting to say if the road was clear and then when to return back in after overtaking. I think the young fella is under estimating the challenge… :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
