"Heavy Haulage through the years"

Froggy55:
Possibly the whole Diamont T chassis?

Yes, but I have a vague memory that another enthusiast thought it might have been a special chassis, because it looks longer than an ordinary WW2 6x6.

What a great picture, Dig, probably just a random backload he picked up while his change lasted in the phone box.

In the days before time was invented, and I was still driving my 4 wheeler Albion, I rang round for a backload and collected a very large storage tank. I can’t say what size it was other than at its widest point it was way beyond my mirrors and I did borrow a tape measure to check the height. I was also given a pot of paint and a brush and lifted up by a forkie to paint the edges front and back. It never occurred to me, or them obviously, that I might need an order much less a route and possible ■■■■■■, I was just happy to be doing my first ‘abnormal’ with headlights on throughout the day.

Night out at a cafe and an early start in the dark next morning (marker lights? what marker lights?) I rolled into Sandiacre on my way back to base. There is/was an arched bridge which I knew about and had checked ok for height but needed the centre of the road. On the exit from the bridge there was a streetlight and I saw a car coming towards me from some distance away. Knowing I could clear the bridge and get back on side before him I pressed on and was clear as he passed me. But he was weaving a bit and, under the bulge of the tank, I could just see in my mirror him disappear behind me. I stopped and went to look and he had rammed the bridge abutment doing a lot of damage to the car.

The police arrived, agreed it was not my fault, particularly as he smelled really strongly of booze, and they ignored his protests that I was on the wrong side of the road. I can only assume that he didn’t see me at first, only when the streetlight illuminated the tank as I emerged from the shadows. I don’t know how they proved such things in those days, I expect before breathalysers, but he was later convicted and banned. The newspaper report said that he was a £10 pom awaiting a date for his ship to OZ, and that with such a conviction, it was cancelled. :open_mouth:

I was wondering why they needed so many tractors, to haul that little transformer. Of course, it all makes sense, when you see the water tower on top of it. I bet it was a good pay day- that’s the value of a good transport manager.

LOL.

Nice one T2 good looking unit.

Dig

Another Lampson mega lift I have taken these from there company adverts so i.m sure they won’t mind the publicity.
I think this one was taken in the US as I haven’t seen these tractor units before and the one on the left has a winch so possibly used in the oil exploration industry.

Cheers Dig

It’s a M52 based Ginaf with a Van Eck cab indeed!

Sometimes you do wonder how on earth some people haven’t seen a wide/long/heavy load coming through…

The following didn’t happen under the same conditions David, but something peculiar happened in France too a couple of years ago, we were transporting windmill blades and on our last stretch of the day (driving ban when it gets dark) my colleague was negotiating a roundabout when all of a sudden he couldn’t get any further, it felt like he was stuck on something, turned out that an old geezer in his Renault 5 tried to get through underneath the (stretched) trailer, when asked if he didn’t saw the flashing lights or all the pilots stopping the traffic he simply answered “non monsieur”

I don’t think the two MAP FL shunters figure very high on the photogenic list ! But if Mike has a look in on this thread he might relent and take a few shots of the FL’s just for you “pv83” they do never the less carry out a valuable job around the depot shifting the trailers. . Cheers Bewick.

Some footage that DIG and Spardo (and hopefully others too) can appreciate
