Hearing

Strange isn’t it doesn’t matter what affliction you’ve got you get sympathy unless your deaf, then every one takes the pee, at least I think they did  . That’s the problem I couldn’t be sure   . But I’ve got a hearing aid now care off the NHS and nobody mentioned telling the DVLA.

Yeah I’ve developed bad hearing and according to the lughole man it’s from noisy engines and driving with the window open (right ear’s worst). Anyway, I can live with the ■■■■ taking cos it’s all done in good humour and I dish it out as well, but it gets really difficult when there’s background noise like people speaking. Watching tele’ with the different volumes and bleeding background music out doing the dialogue is a pain in the aris ! But looking on the bright side, when the wife asks me to do something I don’t fancy, I just ■■■■ a deafun.

Wearing earing aids drives me nuts, so they ain’t often used.

yup bud ,I got the same …noisy engines ,window open…confused them a fair bit until I said I was driver in the uk and we sit on the opposite side lol.not wearing an aid yet but wear a pair o noise cancelling ear muffs at work (cancels the engine noise totally, but can hear the radio /2 way perfect.)

Pete
I have suffered all of the above, including the selective hearing bit. My left ear is the worst and I have tinnitus in that ear as well which doesn’t help. I have one of the NHS over the ear aids but don’t like it at all as I wear glasses it gets in the way. Was thinking of buying one of the aids that fit in your ear on line from “Hearing direct” but don’t know what they are like. Anybody used the company?
One plus is that the hearing aid actually reduces the Tinnitus.

Marvellous how many older drivers get the same problem. Being brought up on noisy motors I s’pose. I’ve got the ‘in ear’ type and they drive me absolutely nuts. They’re ok for a while, but then me lugs start itching…

Totally deaf in left ( have been all life ) have licence yep DVLA know 1 of the other drivers has hearing aids has his licence DVLA know that as well

Used to live next to a totally deaf lady ok she only had her car licence worked full time yep DVLA did know

Years ago I knew of a youngish guy had no hearing whatsoever from birth lived an ordinary life by lip reading etc but his cars had to have rev counters in them.

Obvious really.

had a deaf lad work for or firm for a bit, stone deaf, no hearing at all. didnt effect his license or medical at all. never turned up on time as he didnt hear his alarm in the morning though, seriously…

That is interesting, I have quite good hearing, I can hear very quiet sounds, I don’t have any form of tinitus, and I can hear through a wide range of frequencies (try this LINK if you have good speakers on your computer, I can get up to 16k). But just like you I am struggling with background noise confusing what I am trying to listen to, for instance in a busy pub I really struggle to make out what anybody is saying. Background music in films drowns out the dialog, I need things on loud to hear them properly, but then I can hear very very quiet sounds, I don’t quiet understand it

My wife has a lot of problems with tinitus, (her hearing cuts out at about 9K on the above test… she was a dancer in night clubs, very loud music night after night has wrecked her hearing.

If they start doing an intelligence test to get a licence then there will be a real driver shortage !

I doubt Dozy will be needing this anytime soon

That’s a thought…We could have a drivers mastermind competition with an entry fee and prizes for winners and the profits to a charity.
Driving questions and a specialist subject on anything you like. Could be fun.
who is up for a laugh.

I’ll take biology for specialist subject, got a diploma in it :grimacing:

ACKLAND GRAINGER sell them over here. batteries last over a yr . and shut off after 4hrs if you forget to switch them off at end of the shift. $364 cd. had a pair on my safety helmet and a pair for when I was driving, meant to say they are adjustable volume(what I mean is what you can hear /cant . For me they changed my life no more buzzing/sore heads after a days work. A lot o loader drivers at quarries use them //lol

Can you send me a pair of those please Jimbo.

Come in handy when Mrs B starts.

:unamused: :unamused: they get rid off the normal whinning but sometimes the screetching gets through if you aren’t quick enough to zero the volume.

Mine went all the way to 8.5 ish, mind you, that was on the macbook air. I’ll try again on the iMac, that’s got some good speakers.
