Heard it all now!

OK, doing a bit of shunting in MK last night between depots, keeping the same trailer, just sit on bay wait for the green light, then pull off and go get paperwork, So, on third shunt, gets green light and pulls off and parks opposite to go into office. Guy comes, well, sort of storming out of office, across yard towards me, waving ticket and says " did you pull off the bay?" I said yes, it was on a green light, he says " you must not do that, what if they needed to open it up again to put something in that they had forgotten, that would mean you pulled off on a red light and would be held responsible ", I said, it was green, when I pulled off, how would it be red, I would be halfway across the yard by then and there would be nothing at the door when they opened it. " no, no , he said, that’s not how we do it, when it goes on a green, you must come to the office first and get your ticket so that means you are in the clear to pull off. Anyone come across this kind of ■■■■■■■■ before?

TUT TUT ,didn’t you look for the dusky green light with a shade of puce and some spangly bits that lights up and goes HONK HONK to notify you that some useless article has forgotten half your load ,how very remiss of you …now go and grease your 5th wheel you bad lad

My God, you are right, touch forelock briefly and back away apologising, how could I forget, I am but a lowly paid Driver, it is not my place to question or speak back to these high and mighty people that are entrusted to guide us through our daily tasks, whatever am I thinking, I shall go and flagellate myself with the cat o nine tails in the drivers rest room at once.

Years ago when Bejam were on the go I used to make regular deliveries to their Stratford Cold Store you got a green light then went an got your docs proceeded to the security barrier with doors open to be inspected by security before departure usual practice.
On one occasion I did the usual , but unbeknown to me whilst I was walking to my cab an idiot on a pallet truck decided to put some more pallets onboard and got a ride in the trailor to the security barrier and tried to give me an earfull of abuse for leaving the bay with him on board . I had to drive back onto the bank so he could get his truck off and into the office to report the incident the bank manager said he was fully to blame and would give him a written warning and appologised to me as I had used the correct procedure when leaving the bay under a green light.

Delivering to Asda Bankside in Falkirk last year, got the green light, so went to get my keys ans p/w from office. Pulled off the bay and heard a crash from the back of my trailer. Jumped out to investigate fearing the worst. But it was only my pallet truck that they hadn’t bothered turning over on its side rolling out the back.

Question ,

Why do they take your keys off you when unloading

Yes mate,at the DHL freezer warehouse at Wisbech, that an ignorant(zb) young “foreman” on nights does the same,he also tried to bollock me for wearing a high vis coat, said, well bawled, the sign says high vis waistcoat, the answer to which was, along the lines of,go forth and multiply! :grimacing:

H&S BS.
So you can’t pull off dock before they say.

If that is how he wants to operate things then perhaps you should suggest to him that the bay light isn’t turned from red to green until after you’ve been issued with paperwork. Does this fool consult other nearby road users at a set of traffic lights before setting off on a green light?

that’s what i had assumed ,i was just hoping for a more technical answer other than H&S BS because as evidenced by this thread ,even if you do pull off when they tell you to ,it’s usually wrong

When I worked in intake a few years ago, I didn’t bother with keys. Can be boring waiting to be tipped with no radio. Just said wait for green light.

Too be honest, thats the only answer I can give personally. Does most H&S make sense over common sense?

Some places ask you to take the red suzy off…rather than bugger about with keys.

So you cant drive off with their forklift in your trailer.

Its not often i go to places and they take my keys though.

I have been to a couple of places where they wouldn’t tip a trailer with a unit under it - White Arrow in Droitwich was one. I had a regular drop there and the bays were really tight for a 45 footer. The first couple of times I dropped the trailer, only to find that by the time I got inside, I was already tipped. I didn’t bother after that.

The other was Dairy Crest somewhere or other - they were dead strict about it.

Theres a few places I go to that not only take your keys but also put a lock on the red airline and then make you wait in the naughty corner  yet you can go to another dc run by the same lot and its ok drive give us your keys and stay in the cab .good job the radio works without the ignition being on in an MAN luckily

DSG, Avonmouth, (DHL) hand keys in and sit in the waiting room, apparently, it is company policy

DSG, Newark, sit in cab with keys, yep, you’ve guessed it, DHL :unamused:

This is not recent, and I’m sure it was in Bicester. On the bay, hand keys in(spare set). Few minutes later, sat in the cab.Banging and shouting. ‘Sorry,Drive, bit of a problem with the leveller, can you move forward a few inches then move back when I tell you’ .So I immediately did as instructed, and not an eyebrow was raised.

In that case it should be red, amber and green.Which would logically mean red light don’t move, red and amber go to office and green move. :bulb: :smiling_imp:
