health

been discharged from hospital after suffering a heart attack…had 2 stents inserted. i know i will have to inform dvla.anybody know wot the outcome maybe on this condition regarding my hgv.

I had a heart attack and was fitted with three stents, after three months I had a triple bypass.

I could not drive car or truck for three months after the heart attack (YOU must notify the DVLA), and a further three months after the bypass. I then had to take a fitness test to prove to the DVLA that I was fit to drive on my HGV. This involved completing 9 minutes on a treadmill machine while hooked up to a cardio monitor.

The DVLA gave me my HGV back after a couple more months. I now have to take a full medical every year. I had my bypass at 53 years old, and I’m now staring 60 in the face…and still have my HGV.

Hope this helps, If you want to chat over a phone about it, PM me

Ozzy only got stents - maybe ask your doctor or your after care clinic if you have to inform dvla?

with stents you do need to notify dvla and do the treadmill test to prove fitness . i speak from experience , with 7 stents fitted . ( failed the test miserably , end of lgv career )

Do you miss the road or is it a blessing?

it all happened so quickly that i din’t think much about it at the time harry . i was 64 by the time i was sorted out , so i was nearing retirement anyway . looking back i am glad i failed the treadmill test because i have enjoyed few years of a better quality of life . i’ve got closer to my family and friends and got fat and happy . cheers , dave

I never missed it, but 8 yrs. later & this long Winter I would go back to international like a shot.

An old boss of mine had heart surgery a few years ago, then about four years ago aged 78 did the treadmill etc and got his LGV licence back.He only does a bit of local loading and shunting when required at 83.

Sorry, never heard of joe.

A bit of advice passed on and yet no response from the OP?

I had a heart attack and 4 stents in July 2012. Informed DVLA, i could not drive a car for four weeks and HGV Licence suspended until completion of a ETT Treadmill test. I chased up my heart specialist , took the treadmill test at end of October ( 16 weeks ) received licence back from DVLA first week November lasting for three years . DONT send your licence back to DVLA , you are only obliged at this stage to inform them. Good luck , its not the end of the world , just get fit.

thanks to you all…lot wiser now…

I think you will also find that the hospital also reports heart problems to DVLA, and definitely your doctor will, when i had mine, the matron told me that they have to do it by law, even though i did not have surgery, but survive on medicines only ( 5 a day ) I sent off for my renewal last October, and received a shiny new one 2 weeks ago, so it looks like i might go back to work for a couple of days a week after Easter, or maybe not, i have lounged around at home for the last 6 months, and i have found that i can manage financially, which is an important factor, still smoking, drinking, running a 3 ltr merc, so things are ok,

8 Heart attacks, quintential bypass, type 2 Diabetis, do I still have my LGV… you bet I do

Really?
I decided to quit smoking while having my heart attack,And since the triple bypass I no longer drink either. I prefer life to last just a tad longer thank you  I would have preferred a full transplant, but i have the same old pump but new hoses

Did they fit “quick-release” connectors just in case?

Sorry, matey, couldn’t resist that!
